I just bought a second-hand PAL ID. It has been years since I worked in a place that had one, but this one looks different from what I remember. There's a white translucent area surrounding a black area. Would someone please snap a picture of theirs with the light on and post it?

What you have is the filter for glass lenses. The filter for plastic lenses is the green one Braheem has posted above. Your filter can be easily replaced (they just pop out) but you'll have to purchase one. Mine originally came with both and it's about 12 years old.

Thank you both for your help. SharonB, that makes sense. I bought a bunch of stuff at the same time as the PAL ID, and I know there was another filter (just have to find it -- aarrgh).

If you hold that filter up to the light you will probably find that it's a very dark blue/purple. That's the filter for glass lenses. If you can't find it in your "stash" - try E-Bay!
