    Question

I have a patient who has been wearing cosmolite ST-28. Rx around +7.00 and ballance. The patient has just recieved a horrible thick pair of CR-39 glasses from the VA. Patient report that this is the best he has seen out of either eye in years. The cosmolite lenses are 9 years old, the new glasses have only minimal change in Rx. Old glasses are badly scratched.

Patient wants me to make him a new pair of glasses in socially acceptable frames and thin lenses. My question: Would he be seeing better with new CR39's due to some inherent optical quality or just due to new unscratched surfaces? Don't want to make him something he sees worse than those VA glasses but don't want to use higher indexes if it will compromise vision.

I would vote for the "scratches" as being the culprit.. and if he decides to got with a different index for wght. then give the Kodak a try... nice lens ....
Another thing to take a look at is the base curve of the CR39 compared to what the cosmolit was on.. usually going to "flat" in curve really pesters someone that has mono vision..

Only a guess, but your guy may be enjoying the increased magnification from thicker lenses with the higher BC.

You do mean cosmolit curve top 28 I believe. What about vertex disance changes between the two glasses. Scratches I am sure are part of the problem. If spectralite is available, I might try that abbe is still very good and also aspheric and thinner.Ar coating might also be helpful.
