White paper on position of wear now available from link in OptiBoard file archives

A new white paper regarding the optical principles and practical implications associated with the position of wear of spectacle lenses is now available from the following link in the OptiBoard File Archives:

    To all:

An absolutely terrific treatise! Certainly cleared up all the fuzzy spots and incorrect assumptions I had. Shows the importance of all the POW stuff from the lens designers perspective.

Will unabashedly steal and plagerize from this. Sorry Darry. But with attribution.

Hi. I am trying to get from the theory to clinical application. Are there any calculators, eg online or downloadable, that will allow p o w compensation to be easily evaluated. Are there standards between digital lens manufacturers as to what is the "standard" p o w for which no compensation would be done? Thanks

I have a basic Lens Tilt & Wrap Compensation Calculator available at OptiCampus.com. You can also download a more sophisticated program for Windows from the Articles and Programs to Download section on OptiCampus.

There really is no "standardized" position of wear, so you are likely to see variations among lens manufacturers for the assumed lens vertex and tilt values used for the default position of wear. Typically, the default position of wear used for each lens brand is determined by the lens designer. In some cases, there may even be a marketing advantage associated with the position of wear for a given lens design, because the values may have been determined from a larger sample population of measurements, for instance, resulting in more representative default values.

Also, the only set of position of wear values that would not require prescription compensation would be zero pantoscopic tilt, zero face-form tilt, and a vertex distance that equals the lens designer's assumed vertex distance. A compensation is generally still applied to lenses that have a "default" or average position of wear, although the actual prescription changes involved may be small in most cases.

That said, it is important to remember that prescription compensation applied to any lens, "digital" or otherwise, offers only marginal visual benefits compared to full optical optimization for the position of wear, as explained in my memo.

    Best regards,
    Darryl
