Eyemed to Partner with Essilor Labs

I got this from Nikki DiBacco, more news coming soon:

"1) EyeMed has grown dramatically over the last 10 years and plays an increasingly important role in our industry. It has a very strong reputation among Managed Vision Care companies and is consistently ranked at the very top for the services it provides to both its members (patients) and independent providers. Its track record for innovation and unwavering commitment to benefit utilization make it one of the best kept secrets of our industry and it’s time to change that. We have a great story to tell and should be proud of what EyeMed stands for. This press release is just the beginning of a new way of communicating to the markets we serve.

    2) To this end, in 2013 EyeMed will begin the evolution of its business model with the objective of further improving both the member’s and the provider’s experience. For lenses and lab services, EyeMed will adopt a model similar to the one used by its main competitors featuring a defined lab network that guarantees best in class standards for quality, service and efficiency in partnership with Essilor. The model will be tested and finalized in the first half of 2013 in collaboration with a large number of independent providers that will be able to give feedback and help fine-tune the final version. This is an unprecedented step that signals EyeMed’s commitment to establishing a stronger relationship with the provider community at large."

Sounds like Eyemed policyholders who want same day glasses from an indie are out of luck, and I'll bet they'll be out of luck if they want Hoya or Zeiss product too.

It's ironic that they take market share from their competition by being different, and once they gain significant ground, try to emulate them.

How so? It makes sense that their arch-enemy (VSP), owns their other arch-enemy (Marchon), but I've never seen them pushing a lab connection like this.

They were offering something like 20-25% off when you use ELOA claiming you doing the work for Eyemed patients!

From my LVCMS (LensCrafters Vision Care Management Services) which pre-dated EyeMed, they were always planning to take on VSP by appealing to independent Opticians and OD's who were not or could not be affiliated with VSP. They began by hiring former VSP management to get the ball rolling and never looked back.

    Eyemed New Roll Out Questions

"Does anyone have any information reguarding required participation in the test with Eyemed and ELOA Labs with private practice. We are being told we do not have a choice. We are being told that if we don't participate in the test we will be dropped from Eyemed. We do not want to participate because it will require us to us a different lab that we do not like and have bad experiences with. We don't want to participate until our lab is included in the test which will be later on. Is that legal for them to threaten us like that. Sounds like to us someone from the lab we don't like has Eyemed in their back pocket. Which is a conflict of interest. Monopoly!

I'm wondering, does it seem different than Davis or VSP, as far as being required to use a 'preferred' lab. Also, if someone has EyeMed in their pocket, I think they must have incredibly large pockets***. :)

***LUX shows €3.7B in equity and Essilor shows €3.3B (2011).

Eventually, you may have to make the decision between providing excellent service, or providing Eyemed. All the insurance companies are making it difficult to do both.

I have a hunch that private practices will with in-house labs will be required to use the Essilor lab network (thus killing their same-day-service advantage). I also have a hunch that Lenscrafters will be exempt (thus taking business away from the private practices, and giving it to the big LC). I called EyeMed to ask this question directly, but they "won't know until they roll out the program." I also called my Luxottica rep. Figured she might have a little inside info.

I have heard of this, but only when the location has their own surfacing lab in addition to a finishing lab.

All we did was got in contact with Eye-med explained that we had a Lab that Surfaces and finishes lenses, they sent a contract to look over and we negotiated terms. took approx three month of back and forth emailing but we got what we wanted, and our customer are very happy
