They last a long time, if taken care of. Expensive to fix and the engines make a funny noise. WRX's are sweet, though.

We had a '92 Legacy. Loved it, but we had to get rid of it. Baby #3 was on the way and car wasn't big enough. The people we sold it to still have it!

We would get another one in a heartbeat.

From experience, they handle Big Bend Nat'l Park great! (Off road, 40 some miles down to the Rio Grande thru arroyo's and wash outs.)

From experience with the 1998 to 2005 Foresters:

the all wheel drive is nice but you must maintain proper tire diameter within a tight tolerance range

the standard 4 cylinder engine is underpowered for the vehicle, the six is better but requires high octane as does the turbo version

the engine makes distrurbing metallic noises

the engines are prone to head gasket failure which may be due to the boxer flat four design where part of the engine pistons and cylinder may be oil dry after sitting

    poor gas mileage

I have a Legacy and just hit 167,000 miles. It gets great gas mileage and the AWD is really nice in the winter. It is a 90 something model. Body has some rust around tires but that is typical. No major problems just regular maintenance like clutch replacement.

Don't know much about them aside from my mother's being in the shop an awful lot. I had a 96 audi A6 wagon that is one of the best cars I have ever had the privilege of owning. Comfortable, reliable and easy to work on, unstoppable, and could haul more than any SUV smaller than a Suburban. Good fuel mileage and powerfull too but I'm having a hard time trying to find another one now.
