Greetings--I am a prospective student interested in becoming an Orthoptist. I realize that there are very few schools in the US and that they matriculate approximately one to two students annually. A few questions:
a) is admission to the respective programs competitive? I am a recovering lawyer without a hard science UG but have taken 15 hours of Chem undergrad, four hours of bio, stats and am registering for A&P. In addition, I have taken stats and psychology.
b) are there Orthoptist here? I used the search function (and searched via google) but was unable to find much except a promotional video.
c) how does one support itself in the two year internship, since student loans are not allowed nor are students allowed to work?
d) I have no background in the eyecare industry--I am assuming this would hurt my chances of admission to a program?
Any information would be very much appreciated. I want a profession that is sociable, makes a difference and is intellectually challenging while not incredibly stressful. An orthoptist sounds like a great match.
