    Disappearing threads

Am I missing something, or did an entire thread with all posts get deleted recently?

Yes, at the request of the original poster.

IMO, that's not good. Lock it down, maybe, but to totally delete it is wrong. Again, my opinion.

Agreed. Some people put a lot of effort into that thread. I don't think they appreciate having their posts summarily deleted. I will consider this possibility in the future before putting much effort into posting.

You know how sometimes you say things that start a fight and you wish you never said them? That's when an OP asks to have the entire thread deleted. No big deal.

I disagree Judy. Censorship of this magnitude is a big deal. Shutting contentious threads down is appropriate. Complete deletion of all posts due to one person's request is not.

OP started it, OP gets to finish it, especially if the thread goes sideways, as they often do around here, and you don't want your name associated with it. Just my opinion, and I'm entitled to it.

Business must be very very slow on this Monday morning everywhere in most offices for a conversation like this to be taking place.

    Just a FYI IMHO........

For my part, I was going to share a pd release that I had posted on that thread, only to not be able to find it.

Nothing stops you from doing that. It may even get more "views" as an independent post.

Clarification : I was out last night discussing the pd release that I had posted to that thread. I didn't have the hard copy or file with me so I went looking on OB for it. It was no longer there.

That's ok, I have a copy at home, I just didn't have it with me and the topic came up. I was going to use the OB post to share it with a friend. It's not a big deal in itself, but I was starting to wonder why I couldn't find it. You liked it huh?

I planned on using it as a reference /starting template if I ever needed to make my own.

Wes, I wouldn't call it censorship.

In the other fora I post on, the moderators won't delete a post even at the OP's request, the reason being that the OP and subsequent posters need to own their words. Yes, threads go wildly off course, and posters do regret their posts, but once said, it shouldn't be allowed to be taken back. With this kind of policy in place, people tend to think a little bit more about what they write and are (a bit) less inclined to go wild if they know their posts will be around forever. The moderators also put in a time limit on the amount of time a person could go back and edit their posts for the same reason.

The lock-down and closing of a thread should, IMO, be the only tool used to end an out-of-control thread.

Man, everyone was jacked up in that thread- including myself. It's like a hangover- bits and pieces of memory keep coming back to you throughout the day, and you realize that showing your ugly side in print wasn't really such a good idea after all.
