in US i notice that tattoos are more offen in public view. Maybe because i visited Las Vegas the tattoos are more offensive in such a place! Same in our islands where the tourists are many. But can a tattoo inspire the person you have opposite you in a scientific way? Optical industry is about health therefore everyone's mind goes to doctors, high level education and most of all scientific appeal. If i was going to choose for my eyes health i would choose the non tattoo person. If i was going to choose the best cocktail then i would choose from the tattooed person (especially woman)!

In my shops in Greece the tattoos are not allowed but generally we do not have many people be inked. Also we force them to wear a doctor's robe, in order to increase the scientific profile of the person who serves the consumers. Thats a good issue to comment on it! Do you use white robe in optical stores? In Greece is more often to see it.

Angelo, how do you know your employees don't have any tattoos? Do you get them all naked for a physical check before you hire them? How can you see a tattoo on the butt, back, upper arm, chest, and legs?

Totally agree. Tatoos are akin to pony tails and Mohawks. I've known plenty of nice people who sport them, but you have to admit they often carry a certain pre-concieved notion

Personally speaking, I'd far rather have someone skilled at what they do who was covered in tats and piercings than someone who hadn't a clue as to what they were doing.

While lunching at a national 24-hour diner chain, a young woman came in to apply for a job. She was dressed in scrubs, probably from an office in the medical building nearby, quite well groomed and polite. The manager was obviously impressed, until they shook hands. The young woman had tattoos on her hands. After she left, I heard the manager remark that she couldn't hire anyone with tattoos on their hands. Other areas didn't seem to be a problem, but they drew the line at hands. Just sayin'.

sounds like discrimination to me... there is makeup that can cover even the darkest of tatoos. Just sayin'

My response to the "Can't we all just get along" talk: Keep dreaming, it ain't gonna happen. We all judge. It's wrong, it hurts, but it's reality. I think we have a few more generations before the more 'taboo' body decorations become acceptable in mainstream jobs. We can't even get over the prejudices of race, religion or sex. It's gonna be a long time before we get over ink and body piercings.

I'm not sure you got what I was saying. I personally don't have a problem with tattoos, since I have two. What I'm saying is it's gonna take a long time before body modification is not considered taboo.

Regardless of what the written policies may or may not be, owners, managers, and those in a position to hire will allow their personal preferences to influence their hiring decisions. At the end of the day, they will hire whom they think will help the bottom line.
