Optical industry is about health therefore everyone's mind goes to doctors, high level education and most of all scientific appeal. If i was going to choose for my eyes health i would choose the non tattoo person. If i was going to choose the best cocktail then i would choose from the tattooed person (especially woman)!

In my shops in Greece the tattoos are not allowed but generally we do not have many people be inked. Also we force them to wear a doctor's robe, in order to increase the scientific profile of the person who serves the consumers. Thats a good issue to comment on it! Do you use white robe in optical stores? In Greece is more often to see it.
Angelo, how do you know your employees don't have any tattoos? Do you get them all naked for a physical check before you hire them? How can you see a tattoo on the butt, back, upper arm, chest, and legs?

Might be ok for a beer run, cooking the brats, or cleaning the windows, although I'd pay by the job, not per hour.

We had a house full of opticians about thirty years ago (are you reading this John and Carl?) with a severely tatooed, heroin addict, live-in maid who was quite ambitious, considering the circumstances. We would have hired her again.

Hire her again for her cleaning ability or her connections?

Yes, let's discriminate against that guy/gal who has multiple piercings just because "I find it offensive".

Come on people. Stop and think about what you are saying/doing here. Why can't we all just get along with each other and judge people on their merits and knowledge instead of the way they look?

(with apologies to Dr. Martin Luther King)

I have a dream that people will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by ink on their skin or by the number of their piercings but by the content of their character.

Personally speaking, I'd far rather have someone skilled at what they do who was covered in tats and piercings than someone who hadn't a clue as to what they were doing.

    Perfectly said!!!!!!

The young woman had tattoos on her hands. After she left, I heard the manager remark that she couldn't hire anyone with tattoos on their hands. Other areas didn't seem to be a problem, but they drew the line at hands. Just sayin'.

sounds like discrimination to me... there is makeup that can cover even the darkest of tatoos. Just sayin'

Probably at the same Denny's location that is now applying a surcharge to all orders, supposedly to "cover Obamacare" for their underpaid employees.

I'm not sure you got what I was saying. I personally don't have a problem with tattoos, since I have two. What I'm saying is it's gonna take a long time before body modification is not considered taboo.

No, but at a similar "diner" style chain where everyone gets the opportunity to wash dishes. I don't think the makeup alternative would work either.

Don't know, I don't generally get to see them naked, but I bet we would be surprised :)

In response to Mr. Ryser's comment about have we ever seen a president or other world leader with a tat.

A man went to an eye specialist to get his eyes tested and asked, "Doctor, will I be able to read after wearing glasses?"
"Yes, of course," said the doctor, "why not!"
"Oh! How nice it would be," said the patient with joy, "I have been illiterate for so long."

Regardless of what the written policies may or may not be, owners, managers, and those in a position to hire will allow their personal preferences to influence their hiring decisions. At the end of the day, they will hire whom they think will help the bottom line.
