    Exclamation I Need A Book

I recently picked up a copy (PDF file) of 'ESSENTIALS OF OPHTHALMIC LENS FINISHING by Brooks'. If memory serves me (sometimes) there is also a similar book about surfacing by Brooks or someone similar. Does this actually exist and does anyone have a copy of it, even another PDF type copy would be good?? I have the B&L Job Coach, but the one I'm thinking of gets into more formulas and deeper into trouble shooting. Also, is there something similar about AR Coating??

I have that book. It's copyright 1992. Considering modern surfacing technologies, it's very out of date. From what I've seen of Jacqui's posts, I'd say her knowledge level is far beyond what's supplied in this book.

Wes, keep in mind that what Jacqui does (kind of like me), isn't covered by "modern surfacing technologies". She and I tend to do the dinosaur thing (and I don't mean that we are 60 million years old either LOL!!).

Good book but dated material. The formulas and the procedures are still relevent to an antiquated lab.

LMAO at the "antiquated" comment...perhaps you don't realize that those "formulas and procedures" you consider "antiquated" are at the heart of all of the software programs and apart from no longer having to worry about such things as prism rings or elliptical error, they are still very much at the heart of ALL ophthalmic processing.

The LMS may still use those very same formulas but the LDS systems require much more accurate algorithms which go beyond the simple version of the formulas we are accustomed to working with in ophthalmics. Still very good material and a good fundamental. The book definitely needs an update or revision to remain relevant, I am not one to reinvent the wheel so an updated version would be great. The text has been out of print for many years and was hard to find. I had to call the author and he sent me a spiral bound copy, he is a very smart and interesting man.

Jacqui, I didn't see where this had been addressed in any of the earlier posts, but "Essential for Ophthalmic Lens Finishing" only covers lens edging (finishing) and benchwork; it does not cover lens surfacing. It is basically a new edition of Brooks's old "Essentials for Ophthalmic Lens Work," with significant updates.

Dr. Brooks published two books on lens surfacing: the comprehensive "Understanding Lens Surfacing" and the more concise "Lens Surfacing Handbook," both currently out of print. He told me several years ago that he was planning to eventually update "Understanding Lens Surfacing," but he hasn't published anything new, yet.

I suspect that surfacing technology is changing so rapidly at this point that he wants to wait until the proverbial dust clears. But I'll ask him about the status of a new edition though, the next time that I talk to him.

In the meantime, you can keep an eye out for used copies on sites like Alibris.com and Abebooks.com, as Fezz suggested, although "Understanding lens Surfacing" typically sells for $$$. You can also sometimes find a few older, used surfacing books for pretty cheap, like "Ophthalmic Lenses for the Rx Laboratory" by Stead and "Ophthalmic Lens Surfacing" by Mancusi. Sometimes an old B&L "Job Coach" even shows up.

But none of these other surfacing textbooks provide the level of detail, pictures, et cetera that Brooks's text offers. You may also consider picking up a copy of "Bennett's Ophthalmic Prescription Work" by Wakefield, which is one of the few books still in print that at least provides an overview of lens surfacing.

    Best regards,
    Darryl

Could you check it out, review, and critique it?

Is it outdated? Is it informative? Did it cover what you wanted? Would you reccomend it?
