A question for those who know about optical licensing. Can I as a non-citizen, un-licensed optician own or start a wholesale lab in Canada?? I realize that this may vary from one province to another.

You can't dispense without a liscence in Canada except in B.C. where anything seems to go.

The short answer, Jacqui, is yes. The rules for ownership of a foreign-based business will apply. A laboratory can be, and are, foreign based. Licensing is not required to do wholesale lab work.

Uncut is right. Most of the wholesale labs in Canada are foreign (Essilor) owned at this date.

What the laws say about dispensing and what is enforced are two completely different matters . So if you are thinking wholesale to the public from a lab then you have just entered the new gray market. As more B&M's collapse the labs will go direct .

The idea that you "can't" dispense in Canada without a license except in BC is somewhat incorrect, as so far BC is dispensing into the rest of Canada without proven license.

There are absolutely NO licensing required to start a wholesale lab.

Jacqui....why not email me a price list and I would be glad to compare your products and pricing , as per here in Quebec. It would be refreshing to see a good independent lab open that had, what it takes to make ECP's happy...
