@Wes, yes, I'm seeing a lot of damage due to alcohol for cleaning off tag residue. Especially on my Vera Wang zyls. I must be a crack head, becuase I love the smell of goo gone, and it works well if you just use a smidge.

Hmm. I believe you. Just odd that I've never seen it happen, and I've been using alcohol for years. For that matter, this thread is the first I've heard of it being an issue. Learn something new every day...

We don't use alcohol on zylo frames. Destroyed too many that way. One of my lab techs created his own "secret" mix that he swears by. He won't tell any of us his recipe, but I don't think it works as well as he says it does.

I'll stick with Goo gone, and Dawn soap.

I'm not sure what is wrong with me, because I like the way WD40 smells too.

My husband thinks I'm insane, because I love the way the inside of the submarines smell. He says it's something called Amene (sp?) and that no one on the boats like it, but I love it. When he comes home from deployments it's implanted into everything he brings off the boat. I guess I was meant to marry a sub guy.

I will also admit that can't stand any perfume. I think they are all migraine inducing toxins that should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Do you enjoy the smell of gasoline as well? I do. I like tire shops, and the smell of motorcycle exhaust. I can blame my Daddy and my Grandpa for those. haha.

They must use it in aircraft hangars too!

Yes, if you use an alcohol pad on a zyl temple and rub a few times, you will see the finish change. It gets less glossy. I switched to using Goo-Gone and this works much better and smells better too!

I've damaged safilo product with denatured alcohol, to my surprise. You can douse our cheapo Gotham 2000s (or whatever they're called) in the stuff. It buffs out, be gentle though.

WD-40 no longer has that distinct smell. The little straw is also built into the sprayer so you have to worry about losing it.

Superglue should be a controlled substance.

[QUOTE=chip anderson;431872]Seriously, Acetone is very bad for frames although it may remove surface flaws if done right. Myself I would buff it out. As to removing sticker glue, Naptha is best. AKA Ronsonol Lighter fluid.

It leaves no residue, despite it's purpose it isn't very flamable and does not harm lenses, frames, plastics or paint, or much of anything for that matter.

Another option would be mineral spirits, but you will definately need soap and water for cleanup afterwards.

I just rub it between two fingers. That will get most of it and then a little lens cleaner and cloth.
