    Thermadon glass

As a semi old Optician, I want to call upon the vast knowledge out there to answer a couple of questions that I have wondered about for years but no one has been able to provide answers for me and the Interwebs is more concerned about Snooki and Jwow than esoteric knowledge of obsolete eyeglass materials so I come here to satisfy my curiousity . The blue-green glass sometimes found in older ( 1960's and older) eyeglasses, I understand it was called Thermadon ( not sure of the spelling) anyone have any knowledge of it? I have been told it was thought to help prevent cataracts and that's the most I have been able to find out. When I started out in Optics, it was in the late 80's and for a chain so there was not a great deal of sage knowledge running around about glass. also is it the same as " coke bottle " glass? Just trying to satisfy my curiousity. Thanks in advance.

From System for Ophthalmic Dispensing, Second Edition:
"Therminon is a light-aqua colored lens that reduces, but does not eliminate, transmission in the red and IR regions of the spectrum. An equivalent lens is the Unisol by Vision-Ease."

And neither lens is available (unless someone has some old lens blanks laying around somewhere).

Somewhere in an old text I have a chart (from Dow-Corning I think) that gives the index of refraction of almost everything. Even materials that I did not think allowed the transmission of light.
I also remember from my first optical job at Modern Optics we had loads of differnet "glass(es) with stuff, like barium and the like included. Each with different charteristics, sometimes a trifocal would have three different additives for each segment (each with additives and sometimes different color.) And no, I was just a peon in the polishing department, I don't know much more than I have said here.

For anyone that might have an interest...

There is a small amount of Therminon still in existence.
    X-Cel has some 77mm molded blanks, +5.00 over -8.50 @ 7.5 CT.
If you have an application that these might fit you can contact Dave in Tech/Customer Service.

We used a lot of it when I first started in the late 60's. I too thought it had disappeared long ago.
