    "Matte" mirror coating anyone?

So we have been on a big sun mirror kick at work the last few weeks. We use NACL for our mirrors and love them.

We got to thinking about how cool a "Matte" mirror finish would be and if it is possible. I thought the closest was NACL's Black mirror, but it looks like a very light flash silver mirror IMO.

Called our main labs and no dice. Emailed a couple of specialty labs and no response. Then last weekend I was at the mall and saw a man walk by me. I was too busy checking out his beautiful sunglass frame to notice he had a "matte" blue mirror in his lenses.

I can kick myself for not chasing him down. Lol. His sunglasses looked to be a wood Chrome Hearts frame. His lenses almost looked frosted blue. It was not the typical bright blue mirror. It was more royal blue in color.

I called around to see if anyone was familiar with what I could explain over the phone with no success.

Anyone familiar or know if what I am looking for is possible? A true matte mirror finish?

    Thank you in advance.

I do not know the answer, but Opticote is doing some neat-O things with mirrors. It might be worth a look and a call?

Thank you for the recommendation. I am going to go see them next week at their office because they are literally down the street from where I work.

    Small world huh? ;-)

We obviously have no idea how small this world really is! Chris the owner seems really nice. I hope he does well. Haha, now I know where La la land is!! Wait til you see these things up close. I just got my 1st supply Tues. That 'satin' finish is even more cool now than when I saw them a couple months ago.

    adios

    Hi,

The Dillon sunglasses that we have over here in Dubai are all black / silver mirror with Matt finish. Are there any other color available. We are having the following models : GEORGE/GREASEWOOD/DRAKE/BUDD.

    Regards,

    Ketan

Haven't seen it in sunglasses yet, but at the last NY Auto Show, several "hot" cars are now being featured with matte paint finish...not a bad look, I thought. I could see it catching on.

Will post about my visit next week. Chris was extremely gracious to give us a tour of the facilities and show us the line. They have some great product that we are looking to bring in.

They are hoping to roll out RX by years and and are working on a Brown lens as well as poly polar and tinted CR39.

He also showed me something I have never ever seen before nor thought possible. Nothing to do with Dillion sunglasses or their lenses. Not sure he was supposed to show us so I will ask before I post.

Look for a full review with pics next week.

Your funny. When I 1st googled him & his product I found something very similar. It was on a amo site. The poster said he wasn't suppose to tell the name of something & he was being true to his word.

You left us hanging!!!! The cruelty of it all!

A man went to an eye specialist to get his eyes tested and asked, "Doctor, will I be able to read after wearing glasses?"
"Yes, of course," said the doctor, "why not!"
"Oh! How nice it would be," said the patient with joy, "I have been illiterate for so long."

I'm pretty sure Chris has some inside connections with our military & high tech weapons. Seriously, don't get your hopes up for much more info. My guess Crazy bout optics will be officially sworn to silence as of his next chat with Chris. Hopefully I'm wrong. But I admire his loyalty.

I like this company. He's been perfecting this lens since '87, I think he said. We just have no idea on what it takes to make good stuff! And some of you ask why do glasses cost so much.!? I am paying top dollar for decades of perfection, frame materials, the best hinges & most of all those wicked lenses!

Lol. Well I will say it is lens related just not anything to do with their "NIR" lenses. Nothing to do with top secret military stuff. Though when you walk in to their place you have to walk in to their ammo shop. If you wanna see their weaponry in action go to YouTube and search "Dillon Aero".

They have a gun that shoots 3000 rounds a minute. It looks like the gun is shooting out a laser.

Keep your eyes open for the review next week. ;)

I'm sorry, call me stupid, but I have NO idea what is meant by "matte" mirror. Myself and a fellow optician couldn't figure it out. Isn't matte, by definition, the opposite of mirror?

EDIT: Nevermind... I think I understand it now. >.<

I thought the pic was great, then I saw them again in person! No comparison!

Myself, with my few+ years in he business was convinced it was a defective mirror. The very articulate intelligent gentleman finally convinced me to peek thru them. I was blown away that I could see really well with them. Nope! Not defective!

What exactly does one accomplish with a matte mirror? Is it only for looks, or does it provide some kind of extra special optical value?

I will attach pictures this evening. With their lens it is almost wrong to call it a mirror. It is an internal laminate. It does block out light and reduces reflections off of the lens that are typical of a mirror lens.

Here are 3 pics showing their NIR lens. This is their silver lens. They also have a black lens that looks beautiful with their matte black plastic frames. Let me know what you guys think!

We love them but our practice is more medical in nature so we may wait till they can do rx work as we do not sell many plano suns. We may put a few pieces in to generate some interest in them though.
