i was wondering if any damage to one's eyes can be had if they lie face-up at the sun with the lids closed for several hours at a time (sunbathing). i usually fall asleep like this..

I suggest you see an Ophthamologist as soon as possible! While the eyelids do offer some protection, they are very thin and I seriously doubt they provide complete protection against 5 hours of exposure to the bright sun.
Get yourself to a Doctor!
