    Your childhood....

Today, My co-workers and I have been discussing our childhoods and how much different they are. I'll admit I'm only 23 and so most people think I didn't grow up without technology. I would like take this time out to say, I actually spent a good part of my growing up playing outside, riding my bike everywhere I could, and drinking from water hoses. I really didn't start getting dependent on technology until the beginning of my high school years. As we were reminiscing I realized how much I miss the freedom I felt as a kid. The whole getting to roam all over my small town playing with my friends all day, and not having to come home until the street lights came on. I miss being more dependent on my imagination than on my cell phone.

Anyway, just thought I'd give everyone a chance to reminisce for a bit...feels good.

Yes, childhood was fun. If only I could go back and do it over and know what I know now.

We should be born old and get younger so we can appreciate our youth more!

This son of a Woolworth store manager from the 60's has a lot of fond memories. Christmas morning was manna from heaven.

Screen doors slamming, playing outside until dark, family breakfast and dinners every day, the Sears Christmas Toy Catalogue, running behind the mosquito truck in the summer, sidewalk games like Red Light Green Light and Simon Says. Childhood in the '50's was pretty simple.

How about not knowing what your friends were doing until you saw them! Instead of facebook updates.

I lived in Grand Forks ND growing up and the red river separated us from East Grand Forks MN. It was a 2 miles or so from my house to the bike trail bridge that got us over the river and to the pool in East Grand Forks. Thought I was big timing it when we left the state for a few hours. Bike trail all over that area man that was great times!

Growing up in the country and living on a small farm, I remember going to the feedstore with my Mama to help pick out the feed sacks. I liked pretty prints. In the summertime and on Saturdays, we would rush to get our chores done so we could go out and play the rest of the day. If we had more chores, the neighbor kids would help and if they had more chores, weh would help them so we could play together. What fun, building forts on the hill in the trees above the pasture, thinking the world was so safe. We would take bread and peanut butter with us, and never had to worry about lunchtime. Don't remember taking anything to drink...just out of the creek. That's probably not good now.

We had to pull up the bitter weed in the pasture or the milk tasted awful. We found it best if we did it first in a diamond shape so we could play ball in the pasture. We just learned to dodge the mounds of "stuff".

We probably didn't watch 2 hours of TV a week. Sometimes not at all. We learned to be creative and make things "work". It was good.

Chewing on Sassafras roots all day. And pulling the stems out of hundreds of honeysuckles to get a tiny drop of sweetness.

TV was big in our house, though. Especially at night. The Addams Family, Batman, Dark Shadows, The (real original) Avengers were my favs. I laugh at the kids nowadays who think goth is new.

We had a honeysuckle bush growing at our fence that was pretty tasty. No sassafras roots though, bummer.

Anyone remember going down to the small creek or ditch and making dams out of the clay, catching crawfish and other critters. Occasionally blowing up said dams with firecrackers. Sometimes I get the urge to go back and do this but
I fear that someone would raise hell about trasspass or want to put me away as crazy senile old fool.

We didn't live near a river, but I do remember making mud and then my best friend and all our sisters would build a fort house out of branches. We would use the mud to make bowls, plates, and other utensils. Let them bake in the sun while we decorated the house with flowers and weeds.
