I like to go with the nylon for its more vibrant colors. I also have several 48 star flags in cotton plus an original 45 star flag that would have been flying when my home was new.
One of my pride and joys is an old Canadian Red Ensign with the crest of Canada in the fly...all bunting and all embroidered.

I f you have a local Elks Club, they actually have a ceremony for the final disposition of retired flags......

Ok. I know you aren't suppose to fly them in the rain but what do you do if a squall suddenly starts up? Get outside in a hurry and pull it down? You'll have this flag on your mind a lot. I know- I hang clothes out to dry.
Funny you should bring that up! We had just such a case last week. I did bring the flag in when it started raining but put it back up when the weather cleared about 2 hours later. Since I now am fully retired I have the time but I am sure the novelty will wear off at some point. I am getting some treatments for a medical issue and sometimes I have left the flag up over night. Just today I was wondering what it would take to illuminate the flag at night (acceptable ettiquete sp?) but I think I may have stretched the budget far enough with the glass pole. :)

Just hope your neighbors are as patriotic as you are.
I was not the first in my neighborhood but I was the second flagpole. Everyone says its a great addition to the house.

The United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10 addresses the proper etiquette for treatment of the flag in inclement weather. It states, "The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed." So your nylor flags are OK, but your bunting...or cotton...flags woud fall under the code restrictions.

Nice addition. It's pretty neat to see/read about someone getting excited about displaying such a beautiful symbol of this great country.
I gotta get me one of these. Very nice
PS- your landscaping is AWESOME
