I need a new edging system - HELP!

My current edging system seems to be on its last leg. Its the AIT Practica edger. We had good customer service when we first purchased, but after our warranty expired our customer service has been terrible. Would love some feedback on your edging equipment and why you would recommend.

    I vote Santinelli !!!!!!!!!!!!!
But if you can hold off a bit I'd wait to see what the Optek edger is like. If their edger is half as good as their Surfacing equipment it should be a winner

new or used get a Santinelli. HOw much for mine in very good condition ME-1000? 6 years old and it only has one slight issue that can be dealt with; the small B frames need a little help to get the finishing wheel all the down at the low point.
It creates the personal touch on some orders. We love the machine and want a new 1200 series!

Steer clear of Briot in favor of Santinelli.

Thanks for the info. When I first started here they had a Santinelli but when it died they quickly replaced it with the AIT. I have an Optek generator and it sure does a great job. thanks again for the info.

If you do a lot of poly I would suggest a dry edger from NO/Essilor

I worked with the Optronics 6ES for a while and loved it. I think the 7 has more bevel options and does drilling.

Just got a Weco 580 and am very happy. Santinelli's have great software, but they are over priced in my opinion. The Weco can do about 95% of what the Santinelli can (Santinelli has a better shelf tool) but for about 35% less money.

But have not provided any info on what you are looking for? Drills? High Index? High wraps? Buying an edger without any criteria is like buying a car without any clue to what you want. It might work when you are 16, but not when your out 18 .

I LOVE my NO 7E, it has several bevel options, including shelf and other specialty bevels, grooves normal and wide, and drills. Very easy to learn. Plus no worries about the late nite call that the water system has caused a water issue.

I don't like the cupped edges of the 7E even the HLP version leave after edging. It could be great edger if they find a way to fix that. Also the drill angle in the 7E is very limited, the Weco and Santinelli has much better drills.

Can't beat 7E if you do lots of poly and don't require a shiny edge polish.

The newer version of the 7e has better drilling and grooving angles, but I have the older one and really don't have problems with that. The older ones can be upgraded.

What do you mean by cupped edges?

It takes a little effort to fine tune the bevel polishing but then runs fine. Poly polishes up cleanly, but you don't get that really high gloss. Do you really want that anyway?

NO will give you free phone support forever.

I am surprised nobody recommend the Mr. Blue or the new Mr. Organge. The Nidek/Santinelli ME 1200 is a great choice if you can afford it. I believe Briot has improved its US operations with a new team and the Alta Pro is a good deal. The new Weco 680 from AIT is worth a look. Very easy to operate and has some nice features over the 580/alta pro.

I looked at all of these at VEE. (I also drooled all over the MEI.) Amazing how far in-office edging has come in the past 10 years, especially with drilling options. I sure could have used one of these 10 years ago when I was doing a huge volume of rimless drill mounts.

Mr Orange if you don't need an Auto Blocker, Mr Blue if you do.

IMO Nidek edgers are slow, and Nidek Blockers / Tracers are poorly designed and not very user friendly.

Mr Orange has no lens milling option, and has a Non Auto Blocker, but does have Optical Tracing and Blocking Assist.

Oh, and never a Briot. The most unreliable of all edgers.

Actually I used a Nidek me-1000 and found it very good. Slow if your doing a complex drill mount with edge polish in say trivex, but solid and quality machine for sure. The tracer was more then easy to use, place the frame or lens in the adapter, and scan the tray. We used the scan system. It had the high bevel wheel as well and made doing sunglasses a pleasure. The newer Briot's like the Alta pro are a nice machine as well, very user friendly, with a little getting to know and very fast. Speed not necessarily being the be all end all in edging as I'm sure many know. It's the final product and quality that goes to the dispenser and finally the customer that you need to be aware of.

    Just my two cents.
