    Confused What is your opinion?

I have a denturist friend that has hired a company that does preliminary exams of potential patients and if needed they refer them to him. I was approached by this company and asked if the optical profession would benfit from this service. I said more than likely but I thought that it would cause a conflict with the College because the individual doing the assessment is only a Healthcare Associate. They are suppose to decide on how the vision is. But how? I don't know they did not specify. They must have to refract. I would think it would be illegal. Your Opinion?

simple vision tester just like they use at the driver license department. Look inside, see a few images, make your response....and hope you pass. If not you are sent off for an eye exam. Nothing illegal there. you can buy and use one of the units in your store. Why pay a company to do what you can do for free or a few bucks.

In BC, where the refracting (sight testing) by opticians is legal, people are already skipping their eye exams ("because someone looked at my eyes a year ago, before they made my glasses"). Vision care is so much more than just a vision test. Some people who suffer from serious asymptomatic diseases never have any issues with vision until it is too late. We need to encourage regular eye examinations, regardless of how the vision is. This kind of a service in our industry seems pointless to me.

In my province this would be called refracting and be met with lawyers from Optometry.
