  • Eyewear for 16 month old with Down syndrome

    Hey,

As the title suggests, I have a patient with Down syndrome. She is quite hyperopic, with a pile of astigmatism. She has a very narrow PD, with a big head. Top that off with essentially no bridge.

We tried putting lenses into a Baby Banz frame which worked great for size, but her lack of bridge means they rest right against her eyelashes so she won't wear them.

Any other suggestions? I really would love to find a frame with adjustable nosepads but a strap instead of temples.

    Thanks Opti-nerds!

There are some threads on this board about this particular company, Specs4Us, with a little bit of user feedback. Here's their website:

Other than Baby Banz, that's the only one I know of for your situation. I'm sure there are others out there. . .
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

+1 No screws or nosepads, and lots of tiny eyesize options. Also very durable.

2nd vote for specs4Us. They address the bridge and narrow pd large head issue. I've seen Down Syndrome kids rip other frames off their faces in seconds, put these on and 30 seconds later go on about whatever they were doing before, like the glasses aren't even there.

If it's still available a como baby should hold up as well as anything.

Don't remember the name of the company but they made frames with nose pads attached upside down so they fit DS peops!

Baby frames with "adjustable nosepads" will be hard to find anywhere (due to safety issue).

Other than Miraflex, "Solo Bambini" is another one specialize in babies. "active sport" would be the line (partially) fit your requirements. Call them see if they can customize the frame for your pt.

                    good luck!

Of course an "Optician" could add nose pads to almost any frame metal or plastic right side up or down. Or one could all more thickness to the bridge area and shape to nose. One could even take an impresion of nose and make a nosepad to fit same.

Just curious Chip. Are you using those new Free Form nose pads or just those old fashioned plain spherical ones??

I agree with Paul - look into the Julbo line! The plastic sunglass frames with straps are nice and flexible, no hinges and they are a nice fit on most "bridgeless" kids!
