    Idea Free glasses online

A pt of mine call the other day askingfor her pd. I was rite in the middle of training someone new and sheasked if we gave out pds. I said: “yes” the way the economy hasbeen we give them out but first we explain the dangers of buyingonline and over a package deal.

I asked out pt were she was going to begetting her online glasses from and since she was a bi-focal how werethey going they going to get the fitting height for the add power. She said it was for Coastal.com and all she had to do was payshipping.

At the end of the day I went to thatwebsite and saw the ad. How can you go wrong. You only payshipping. For years I have been preaching the dangers of onlineorders so there has to be a catch.

    My Rx is PD 67
    -3.50 -0.75 35
    -4.00 -0.50 180

I found a frame on the website whichwas priced at $68.00. I picked the free CR-39 stock lenses.
I paid $9.95 for the FedX shipping. Less then a week latter I received my glasses. They didn't lookquite like they did on the website but close enough. My wife saidthey looked good.
    The Rx read:
    -3.50 -0.75 37
    -4.00 -0.50 178
    BC
    OD 5 ½ OS 4 ½ pd 68 ½ oc 16 ½in the middle of the frame.
Thickness of the lenses 1.3 mm

The frame is one that you might see ina closeout store or lenses crafters.

I am emailing them I will tell you whatthey say, if anything.

    Redhot Jumper On line purchase..................................

Good and interesting report............just keep it going so more and more of our friends on OptiBoard are getting to see and believe what is going on.

Do not forget that some of the largest corporation also owns "Frames Direct" the largest of them all outright and is therefore in full competition with the B&M opticians. There you can probably gets the Crizals for nearly nothing on your inexpensive purchase.

"Thickness of the lenses 1.3 mm"

    That's a bit thin for cr-39 isn't it?

ya, my Dr. pointed out that is has a AR coat on it too. It has to be a Hi-Index. Is there a way I can tell. I tooked them out of the frame and dropped on the counter. But its too loud for a drop test.

I realize that there are no laws, but it is still thin. Thin enough for stress from the frame curve to alter the powers of a minus lens I'd bet.

Do they have to check w/ the dr's office in Canada before dispensing. And Just the Axis, PD and BC was off cyl was correct. I still feel like I am swiming. I think it's b/c of the 2 diffrent b/c's. I have had 3 people tell me the frames look nice. So I might put a pair Medicaid Lenses in them. And I did get a nice case and clothe and screw driver and gift cert for a free pair for a friend or someone I hate.
    So heres a break down.
    Cost:
    Frame: $0.98
    SV lenses: $0.65 $1.30
    Labor: $2.50
    Case: $0.38
    Colth: $0.09
    Screw Driver $0.18
    Box and Paper Work $0.50
    Shipping $4.00
    Total:$9.93
    They broke even.
For a laymen. I would come back. If these frames lasted me a year. And I came back and ordered the same for $68 and got the same I would be thinking I was getting a deal. The hold time not realizing I am looking throug a glass of cloudly muddy water.

We really need to teach our pt's

They definitely used the hi index lens, your frame seems a bit on the large size.

Coastal lost money last year, and the losses will be even greater this quarter as they try to achieve market dominance. When they run out of money, they'll jack the prices for the profits.

There are no thickness laws in the US either. The only law is FDA regulations that lenses must be impact resistant, as defined by the drop-ball test. Anybody importing into the US must be registered with FDA, and must be able to show compliance with impact resistance regulations. It is possible, though unlikely, that the producer put a cushion coat on the lenses to allow them to pass drop ball at 1.3mm CT.

No I do not have a drop ball tester. The only drop test I have ever done is to compare Cr-39 to poly you drop them a couple of inches off of a conter top and they sound differtnly. I know there are no standards as to thickness. In The lower part of FL they work hard to make the thinnest lenses they can. And to be honeset these are the thinest lenses I have ever had.

With those BC's, os 5.5 and od 4.5. Your back curves have to be -9 and -8.5 respectively. Thats pretty steep for your rx. Back curve goal is to be closer to a -6, where a +2 or +2.5BC would have been much better and thinner.

The lenses probable Gentex. They would be the only ones that I know with such steep BC on this high of the minus, unless they are warped and you measure them steeper :)
Also Gentex are the cheapest non tintable lens I know from a major manuf.

basically, they (i.e., the online order sites) are making $$ on the frame. the cost of discontinued frames would be in single digit. and the "standard" frames made in the country of you-know-where are so cheap [especially in bulk] one Washington can buy several pairs of them.

The most expensive thing for them probably the labor cost in processing the order.

I wonder why Davis has not teamed up with this company....it would only improve order satisfaction
