    Any Ideas...

I have a patient who is having a surgery near his ear because of cancer. He will have a large bandage around the ear and will not be able to wear his glasses for a few weeks after the surgery. He would like to be able to read and will need to be able to drive so he will need some correction. He asked me to remove one of the temples from his frame so that he can still use the glasses some; however, (as I am sure you can guess) the frame does not sit well enough for him to use them because of the extra weight on one side. I was able to get him a hand held magnifier that will allow him to read but I have not come up with a solution for the distance portion of the RX (contacts are not an option). Anyone have any ideas to share?

How about some rec specs with the headband instead of temples?
Or, how does he feel about a monocle?
    And of course, contacts?

make the temple wrap along the side of the head, not down behind the ear itself.

I think Wes is on to something there with the contacts idea. Rec specs or any other with the headband would possibly work, as long as the pressure over the bandage isn't too much. Good luck.

I had him try some Rec Specs and he was afraid they would put too much pressure in the area where he is having surgery. He does not like the idea of contacts.

I will discuss the possibility of a monocle with him. Thanks!

I wish I could get him to go with contacts. He will not consider that option, though.

One of the pairs of glasses he has is an Oakley and hugs the head rather than wrapping around the ear. He is expecting the bandaged area to be quite large and does not anticipate that he will be able to put any pressure in the area.

Go to Stien Mart or other clotier/accessory place. Get a metal head band (preferably with leather cover. Weld/solder head band to the temple on the affected side. This will go over top of head (put the leather cover back on) and support the side without an ear.

Send me your E. Mail address and I may be able to come up with some pictures of one I did for a young lady missing an ear a few years back.

That is what I was going to suggest. I've seen them and tried them on, and while they are really cool, I don't have a market for them. I think acoakley has the perfect patient for this product. They are not any more expensive than a Cazal either.
