New Member 1st Post... Sola Graduate/VIP woes.... what to use when the Rx has gone ou

    Hello All!

I have a new Px who has successfully worn Graduates for many years but has now become too high plus for them. They now only come in std CR39. I fitted Varilux Ultra ( a semi budget lens) with no success.

I have searched to no avail for a similar hard design PAL.

    Can anyone advise??

PS sorry if this is duplicating previous threads

For high plus powers I've found the Zeiss GT2 works well but I wouldn't call it a hard design.

Are "Graduates" an across the pond progressive? Maybe some of our internationally wise posters could let us know.

    Welcome to Optiboard!

I'll try and answer both posts in one:

Stephen: You should know the old answer in the UK "If in doubt phone Norville" Ring Peter Turner at Gloucester.

Fester: The Graduate is a progressive lens in the UK which has been around (I won't quite say since Adam was a lad) but since the 1980's. IIRC it was designed by Chance-Pilkington as a glass lens and when they bought Sola Optical (now part of Carl Zeiss) it was transferred into CR39 etc. It was the predecessor of most of the Sola progressive lenses

This is the second post I've seen about the "Sola Graduate", not quite sure why people still fit it when there are so many new improvements to progressives. I would agree with Uncle Fester, the GT2 works very well on High Plus Rx. Is the VIP still available over in the UK? I would think that would be similar to the Graduate, but we don't have the Graduate over here. Good Luck!!

FYI, the Graduate is simply a Sola VIP. It's the same design.

To this statement, it is necessary to compare the maps of curves isoastigmatic in specific software. You compared it Steve??

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. I worked for SOLA Optical for 14 years. The VIP and Graduate are the same lenses and used the same molds. (I don't recall if there was a difference in engravings though.)

    Ok Steve,
If you said it uses the same molds, it is obvious that they are PAL. However when there is only ready PAL, can only compare them using a Deflectometer (eg the Rotlex or Automation Robotics) checking maps spherical and cylindrical and comparing in the software.

    Good Night, Steve,

No, I do not use lensguru because the maps are bad pattern to evaluate in my view, I prefer limits of 0.25 or 0.50. So do not put the power RMS error, but use too.
    I study PAL, I have a Rotlex.
Publish some studies this year on PAL.
    Regards

You may want to try the Definity and Seiko Surmount, both are amazing for Hyperopes.

Why in heavens name does anyone always go for a "budget" solution? Why not do the job the Px is asking you to do and provide the best lens, not the cheapest! I can't believe the difference in price would be a deal breaker. Solve the problem!

Couldn't agree more, but the patient decides and if you don't give him the "deal" that's being advertised (always the budget progressive), he's likely to think you're cheating him by offering something pricier. Then he walks. That's how it works where I am.

So he walks.......you can't win them all. My philosophy is you explain that you are going to solve the problem, and it will cost whatever it costs. If he's not happy with the solution I'll return the fee. Someone walking is not the worst thing that can happen in practice, it's using a second hand solution which you know up front will not solve the problem that is the worst.

I do let them walk...better low sales today than a return tomorrow. And I'm not allowed to have a philosophy now, I have to use the corporate's. But I'm developing one anyway.

I spent most of my career working for myself and for the three years I wasn't I was in charge of policy making. I tend to forget there are many who work as employees and are responsible for carrying out "company" policy. Please forgive my rather arrogant response above. I do think, however, that it is short sighted of a company not to let the optician at the fitting table make the calls. In the long run it will grow the business with satisfied customers.
