National database of Opticians
Check out the OCC (Optician Council Of Canada) website on the National database. The OCC is another arm of OAC. Now it appears that they wish to nationalize the Optician database. Do you think this is positive or negative? Who will own this database? Will all suppliers and Optical magazines have access to this database? Who developed this? How was it funded? I invite your comments.

Its a form of unification. That can be good at somtimes. It first starts as an invitation, then it becomes mandatory. But from past history the word management becomes control. Power over media to Opticians. If you dont fall inline your communication as a supplier and an optical magazine will be cut off. Whoever owns this database has a lot of power. OAC is currently fighting over a data base control. This my be a way of changing the game. I am guessing that there was grant money used to set this up. That is why it shows benifits to the public. It would seem that there should be some way to obtain grant money for research on online dispensing. Interesting in the copy I received the OAC office on Garry st was at the bottom. This Angel Cheng | Communications Specialist is hired to promote licensed optician but I was told that she would also be used by OAC. This specialist is funded in large part by provincial regulatory, association and college dollars. Everyone from the OCC made a committment. Of course those dollars come from your registration/licensing fees. These fees will likely be on the rise. You should know that the licensed Optician store where you can buy your logo t-shirts is also run by OAC. Follow the money. Knowledge is power. A database is huge knowledge.

COABC adopted the Canada Organic Standard as the standard for the BC Certified Organic Program as of Jan 1, 2009. Products certified as organic under a CB’s ISO program and certified using the Canada Organic Standard are considered compliant with the federal Organic Products Regulation and may display the Canada logo if desired. These products may also carry the BCCO checkmark. Organic products certified under a CB’s Regional Program may only display the BCCO checkmark.

Dont they just love acronyms. I guess they didnt know this one was taken. LOL
I can not confirm this with absolute certainty but I was informed that they received 250,000 of grant money to set up this database. Why does it take that much money to set this up? I thought every provincial regulatory body already had a list of their Opticians and that this is publically available information.
Perhaps they could donate that money back to Ontario for past fundings and Ontario could apply it to the inspector program or perhaps as silly as it might seem to a College they could consider going after illegal dispensing .
Now wouldn't that be a unique use of the money ?

How would they acquire those email addresses ? They probably have some on file but would it be legal to obtain those from existing College databases and combine them into one national one ? What about privacy laws ? What is the purpose of this ?
What are these College's doing about illegal , unauthorized internet vendors ? What is any Canadian College or Association doing about it ? Has anyone been in Toronto lately and seen the TV ads inside Taxi cabs advertising for illegal unauthorized vendors ?

I recently heard that Nacor is aquiring a 750,000 grant to nationalize professional standards. If that is true I really think the money could be better spend to prevent internet sales. I thought that we agreed upon standards when we first developed the Mutual Recognition Agreement and now that has been replaced by the Agreement on Internal Trade. So these standards already exist. I am not sure how this money will be used then. Is there a way under the Freedom of information to find out how and if these public fund are being used?

In a casual conversation with someone from the OBC (BC`s association) they mentioned the only way for them to get email addresses for opticians is for opticians to give it to them, they can't get it from the Colleges.

The Provincial Regulatory bodies have them all. My province mass email Opticians all the time.
