    Stones available for Vogue 2548B?

    Hi guys,

I have two patients who have Vogue 2548B, and stones have fallen out of their temples. I remember back in my private practice days I could order a kit of screws and stones for certain models. Can anyone tell me if these stones might be available?

    Thanks,
    William

Ultra Palm has just about every size and shape out there for their Caviar line. I prefer to get stones from a jewelry wholesaler. I use CZ instead of crystals or rhinestones. ( I do CZ inlays on lenses and frames). They don't cost terribly more ( except larger ones) but look better.

Tripps has the CZs and also man-made gems, other jewelry suppliers should have them too. I use diamond setting burrs in a drill set-up to mount them. If you're interested in this type of work, a look at Billy Brock's website is in order. www.billybrock.com

Ok so I assume you use a drill to create a countersunk area and then glue the crystals in place? What glue do you recommend ? How do you place the glue so it does not run all over the lens ? If the lens is a/r coated can you still drill and glue ? Any chance of seeing a video of how it is done ?

How are the etchings or engravings done ?

I know I am pushing my luck but a good teacher would send a ticket for Frostbite Falls , how cold is that place ?

Unless you are talking about real diamonds, etc. (in which case go to a jeweler) you can go to Michaels, or other craft shop and mind more stones than of every variety (including Swarosky Crystals) than you can immagine.

Would anyone have a video and list of equipment needed to try this ? On the Billy Brock designs he has engravings or etchings as well as the stones, how do you do the etchings or engravings or is that just the drill head ?

Setting stones into lenses and frames is getting into the realm of the manufacturing jeweler. Try some classes at GIA for starters.

Don't use a drill bit to make holes for the stones, it has the wrong angle!!!!!!!!. Use diamond setting burrs to do the job. Micheals, Ben Franklin and other hobby/craft stores have stones. I use Tripps because I know their quality and selection. Grab a bunch of reject lenses and experiment, it's the way the rest of us learned.

The etching can be done several ways, I use a miniature sand blaster and plastic templates. The engraving is done with a hand graver (or grauver) by a very experienced artist.

P.S. Maybe it is time to start 'Jacqui's School For Wayward and Undereducated Lab Techs and Opticians'

You can get a "miniature sandblaster" from Harbor Frieght, It's called an "Air Eraser" quite inexpensive. Another good product to have for this is a Cricut, which will make you templates to mask what you don't want to sandblast. Doing this freehand requires a lot more practice and expertise than most of us have. Harbour freight also has an excellent table top compressor that is adequate and quiet enough to use in the dispensary or lab. Now see my earlier post in this thread about the inflateable sandblasting cabinet and you will all set.

Thanks for all of the replies. I didn't realize I wasn't automatically 'subscribed' on the thread, and didn't realize until just now that there were replies. :)

I am a little leery of attempting to glue in stones the more and more I think about it. Does anyone with a Lux account know if just temples can be ordered?
