I'm just starting up a shop and now I'm gathering thoughts of what products to carry. I'm scarred for life from luxoticca but know I'll have to carry some of their products. lol

I am not sure of the options that you have in your country. Here in India, there are some small manufacturers who make really good nickel metal frames. Also there are some real good manufacturers of acetate frames. These litreally sell like hot cakes. The metal frames have the standard shapes and I find them boring. Acetate is good.All the best with you new store.

And yeah, Safilo is quite a seller here too. Infact on sensing the Safilo range success they launced a brand specifically for the Indian market and guess what the brand is called. Vittorio. Now you know where the inspiration came from. Do you people have this brand there?

We don't use any of the L word frames. We do well with Tura, Kenmark, some A&A , and just introduced Europa, which I love!

We get a lot of people asking if we carry Ray-Ban, and I see them freaking everywhere. So if you must dance with the devil in the pale moonlight (aka buy from Lux), Ray-Ban will probably make you money. It will also make money for the company most actively trying to put you out of business, though.

Aspex has been very hot for us lately. Prodesign continues to be a strong performer, but not as much as when their colorful 461X and 462X frames were current.

For young women, Kenmark's Kensie line is strong, especially the thought.

For women of all ages, Safilo's Kate Spade and Banana Republic are excellent.

Charmant's Elle and Pure Titanium are strong for mature ladies.

For men, Marchon's Nike and Safilo's Carrera are strong. We have less leverage for more fashion-forward men's styles, but Morel's Oga line is slow but steady, and Clearvision's BCBG are a nice higher-end option. Their new Mark Ecko Cut & Sew is really interesting, too.

And of course Silhouettes sell like mad.

The most likely place you'll see them is in Sear Optical. Yep, make a right at the clearance gloves, hats, and gift boxed ties, go through the clearance display of Land's End jackets, through the appliance section displaying clearance sale washers and dryers, and you'll see a fairly large display of Ray Bans. (I didn't see a "Clearance" sign, but they were reduced in price)

You never "have to" dance with the devil. You know what dances can lead to...

In my recent travels to DC, Colorado, Los Angeles, Arkansas, Nashville, Manhattan, and close to home in Richmond, Ray-Bans are ubiquitous. I've never seen any brand so much in my life. And I am asked if I carry them at least twice a week.

Look for any private frame company's. Match, Lafont, Europa, FreeForm, etc. I have been open 19 months, and I still don't carry any of the "big box" mfg's. There are alot of ways to set yourself apart from the chains, especially with frames.

I know...I was just pulling your chain. RayBan does seem to be one of the most popular, cross-generational brands out there. I don't even think that it's only the brand, but the styling. They don't go overboard on the angles, and reall, they styles are mostly re-treads of frames from days gone by.

Fortunately, their are MANY, MANY, frames out there that look pretty similar, and at a fraction of the cost, it is not difficult to figure out why we don't (have to) sell RayBan.

I'll post some photos in the pro forum of one of the most popular. We sell at least 4 per week.

If you want a Ray Ban look-alike without succumbing to the evil empire I strongly suggest An Original Penguin by Kenmark. The Doyle closely resembles the Wayfarer. I try to spin it as a less ubiquitous style- who wants to be a carbon copy of every other pseudo-hipster when you can have a brand that was favored by the likes of Frank Sinatra or Richard Nixon?

I agree with everyone- We don't need Lux in our office. They have nothing I can't live without!

One other good company, in addition to the ones mentioned, is ClearVision. Their Jessica McClintock line jumps off the boards, and their Fisher-Price line for kids is excellent! We also do well with their Izod line.
