    3-5-2

    Pete,
This formation has 3 in the back, typically flat, with 5 packed in the midfield, and 2 up top. The outside mid-fielders (Donovan and Lewis) have a great deal of running to do in this alignment. This is a popular formation and allows for sufficient strength in the mid-field area and those players can provide defensive numbers as well as transitioning into the offensive end quickly. Many colleges and even my former high school/club program used to use this formation depending on who we were playing.

Thanks Mr. English line judge (amazing how one can have an "unobstructed view" of a goal from way out at the corner). Too bad the other ref missed the German player saving the goal with his forearm as well!

There, now I've done my job as a supporter of the losing team and have whinged about the refereeing- thus freeing everyone else to be "good sports."

It was a good run, we'll see everyone in 2006!

    Angry pathetic

10pence said .We didn't want to win the stupid world cup anyway.
and after that gutless performace it looks like the players thought so too.
perhaps a high velocity lead injection in the back of the head .
instead of dinner with the prime minister ,for there performace would be a better idea.
if only we could play with the same heart and passion when putting on our national colours as the Irish and (gulp) american
teams we might achieve more.

    Capital A

I appreciate you trepidation, but America demands a capital letter. We unfortunately lost our match- but we did gain respect in Soccer. Hell, the English should be used to losing by now! In all honesty, I was pulling for the English team this morning at 2:30am. I thought they could do it. I'm sorry for our British Optiboarders, but they did better than expected, as did our US team. Next time the finals will be the US-England, eh?

I hope you realized I was joking! I hope we can both be in the finals next time around.

so whats been happening in the world of soccer? I think the reason why the americans are not that big into the games is because they are shown at some unearthly hour

I watched most of the replay of the Championship game this afternoon. Well played game, and FINALLY, the officiating crew "let them play!" In fact, I was pleasantly surprised when they didn't call Ronaldo for a foul when he made the steal that resulted in the Brazilian goal (seems like similar play was being whistled in earlier rounds).

I don't suppose we have any members here from Brazil (else they'd surely be posting and rightly bragging up their team). All in all, I'd say the Koreans/Japanese did a pretty good job as hosts!

Now, bring on FOOTBALL season (only 10 weeks to go)!!!
