Unusual problem, AR Coat and glare

    Hi all,
Was hoping someone has some insight into this problem and perhaps a solution. Background:
    Pt was wearing: OD +1.00 -1.00 X075 OS +1.00 -1.20 X090/ ADD +1.50.
    New RX: OD +1.50 -0.50 X080 OS +1.75 -1.00 X095 ADD +2.00

Put her in a Hoya Wide, Super Hi Vision AR Coat. Semi rimless frame.

Her complaint is night time driving glare. Her glare is worse with her new glasses, goes away almost completely with old glasses. Old glasses have some cheap AR that is coming off. This makes no sense to me. I do have one thought that seems plausable and that is because her RX is a higher plus now, the mild glare she was experiencing before is now magnified, despite new AR. Logic would be that the old glasses would cause MORE glare because of the abberations that would be caused by the cheap AR coming off the lense. But that is not what she is experiencing. Ideas?

    Thanks!

If the edges are polished on the new semi-rimless, is there a chance she's picking up reflections from the edges; mine drive me nuts sometimes. And/Or...make sure you've got proper panto and face-form.

The new lenses might be on a flatter base curve resulting in a flatter back curve.

Otherwise you might send her to this psychologist.

Could be the new glare coming in from the polished edges of the semi-rimless frame, or perhaps a flatter base on the new PAL's, or one of my favorites I like to call BR. "Buyers Regret" Sometimes a patient will make up excuses that the new glasses are not working properly, or causing glare, etc... The truth is they just dont like the frame nor the price they paid for them and dont have the heart to tell you, fishing for a refund or a frame swap, they make up problems that arent really there.

    thanks

Thanks for your replies. The edges are not polished but I am having her come in to make some frame manipulations such as wrap and panto. I consulted the doc, and he seemed to think perhaps the bad AR from the old glasses were acting as a light tint, effectively reducing her acuity but light/glare as well. I am going to add a very light gray tint under her AR coat. No, this one is not a case of buyers remorse though I've certainly had experience with those.

Have her do the Indian test.

Next time she goes out at night have her park in a safe place (like a mall parking lot) where she can induce the problem. Then have her shield the top of the glasses with her hand (picture an Indian scouting the horizon). Then do the same from the bottom of the lenses then with both hands shield the sides. If any of these eliminates the problem you now know the direction of where the problem may be coming from.

My experience is more often than not the problem is between the ears.

    Good Luck!

PS Just another thought- Does she have incipient cataracts? Maybe the new glasses are too clear!
