    Nassau Lens

    Is Nassau Lens slowly dying?
They discontinued a lot of house brands like 60mm plastic, Finished FT28, and some others. Always back orders on the basic stuf...
Any inside info? Should look for a new stock house?

They lost a key person that was there for 10+ years because the big E bought them and now has jacked everything up, in my opinon at least. The backorders are horrible and the newer staff doesn't know what they are doing. I was hoping it was just me having these things happen. Its a bummer because their pricing is really competitive.

The practice I used to work for used Nassau (I only left a couple weeks ago) and we were having big backorder issues. Not just you. The customer service people really seemed to be on top of it, but still, if you can't get product....

We find many stock houses to be spotty in their service, stock availability, delivering what they promise, etc. There seems to be a direct relationship between low price and poor quality. It's not worth a fifty cent savings when a quarter of your orders for the day are either on back-order or they send the wrong lens.

I'm not saying Nassau is the worst in this regard...but it is a common theme. with stock houses.

Probably E's slow digestive system, otherwise they'd just disappear.

Its hard for them to compete in the market selling finished SV lenses at premium prices when all these korean\chinese run labs are popping up everywhere selling the same quality (not really) SV lenses for 1/5th of the price because these guys are happy making 0.20 cents on every lens they sell. They get mass produced finished sv stock lenses from china or who the hell knows where and sell em DIRT CHEAP, they undercut everyone else. I myself use one of these labs, for instance when I have a stock 1.67 a/r job, I can get the lens in one day from anyone. But these small one-man-operation Korean labs cost me literally 1/4 the price it does from nassau, or any other lab, with the same warranty, why would I buy from anyone else? My bottom-line on a job like that will be 20% greater. It sucks but its the rotten truth.

In Brooklyn, NY alone in the last 2 years I have seen 3 of these small labs, all run by a total staff of 1-3 people, open up shop and fax me price lists. The prices are too good not to consider using them. These bigger labs like Nassau, Luzerne, etc... will eventually stop selling SV stovck in my opinion and just keep the surfacing labs operational.

They have big overhead, many employees, and name-brand lenses they pay more for. Its just to hard to compete!!!!

    Not exactly true!
Nassau sells their own China made brands like Vanity, Lighten up and Nalco. They can compete with the China basement operations.
Also, good luck getting a credit or SR warranty for the lenses that are sold to you from the basement. I also worked with most of them, but their stock is very limited and updated every 3-4 month at best.

Are they competitive in their pricing compared to Nassau? How about handling warranties?

I have got my stock cr39 ft28 plano w/ +2.50 add from Nassau for years, we use them for temporary lenses right after iol surgery , pt uses them for the 4 weeks prior to getting their permamnent rx. This year have had mammouth issues getting from them, or any other stock lens lab I could think of.

Cost of shipping eats up any price savings with many of the lens warehouses.

Myself, I use my regular lab for stock uncuts (no shipping), or ABB/Concise combining stock lenses with a contact lens order. ABB gives me next day shipping with a 5pm deadline.

I received a flyer for a company which used to be linked with Nassau: LabTech. They used to sell their lab supplies and Dia-style edgers, but now they're selling stock lenses. On their price list I found the 60mm sv blanks I found to be unavailable at Nassau.

Take a look at our online stock and surfaced price lists.
    60mm CR-39 is there!

I have to say though Nova New Jersey has 2-3 day turn around, a/r coated, lenses come in clean and they don't play the tolorance game. And I'm in CA. Nova New Jersey rocks. Maybe you used one of their sister labs because when the power went out a few weeks ago and they had to re-route jobs to their sister lab in the south it was taking for-ev-er to get jobs.
