    Smilie Summer Vacations..where to?

I was thinking that it might be fun to go to the Atlanta OOA meeting and take a couple extra days around there, can anyone recommend something to do/see in that area?

    Al,

I may not be an expert on Atlanta, but I do live here. Atlanta and the surrounding area offer tons of things to do. We have all types of museums, parks and things. The Jimmy Carter Center, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, The Coca Cola Museum. Arts museums, Botanical gardens. I can't even begin to mention all of those right in Atlanta. Some of the sites of the Atlanta Olympics, as well. I don't believe that the Atlanta Braves are playing during the convention. I'll check the schedule around the convention time. There are numerous places that play on the Civil War. Obviously, it favors the South, but is a part of our history. Jonesboro, GA, which is just south of Atlanta is home to Gone with the Wind, and a lot of Atlanta has interest in this and uses it to it's advantage. There are several places around with things to do around that theme. Don't think there will be an antebellum ball going on, but you may find some Southern Belles dressed accordingly. If interested, I may find some for the meeting.

Six Flags over Georgia, theme park. Stone Mountain Georiga is the largest exposed piece of granite in the world, and has tons of things to do there. Did a little courting there many many years ago. Lake Lanier is just above Atlanta, and has a wonderful site for a day trip. Water parks, water skiing, boating, etc. Just a little north of Atlanta, are the beautiful North Georgia mountains, and there are numerous little towns that have quaint places. Helen, GA is a little Alpine type town that is nestled just in the North Georgia Mountains. Very cute and there is also a lot of Confederate history in the area, not to mention the Native American sites in that area. Only about 1 - 1 1/2 hours north of Atlanta. Dahlongea is also just north of Atlanta, in the mountains, and is home of the North Georgia Gold rush of many years ago. You could go and try your luck. Lots of antique stores are around as well.

If any of you are really interested in Golf, we have great golfing all around. You may even persuade my husband to get some foursomes up for you.

About 1 1/2 hours south of Atlanta is a place called Calloway Gardens, which is a wonder natural garden, with plenty of other things to do as well. It is maintained extremely well, and has horticulture centers, butterfly emporiums, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, as well as a beach for swimming. Bicycles are a big thing to do in the park. It is very close to Warm Springs, which is the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Little White House is a cute little side trip.

I'll try to check out things like Chastain Park and a few others, and who may be playing. That's an amphetheater which routinely has great concerts by all types of artists.

Give me some specific areas of interest and I'll try to advise you.

    Hope this helps.

    Diane

No idea about Atlanta. I hear Savanah is pretty cool. We will be headed West to Colorado this summer. Ive never been west of the Mississippi except to fly to Thialand.

Just got back from Savannah and it was very cool! There are galleries, shops and restaurants downtown that ran down to the river. In between all of these were outdoor plays, courtyard concerts and other street musicians. We also spent some time on Tybee Island, just before Hilton Head and had a wonderful time there; I ended up with a pretty good sunburn to show for it.

We stopped in DC on our way back home just in time to hear the President speak on the steps of the Capitol for Police Week. His motorcade flew by us only a few feet away on his way out. They didn't have much going on in the way of festivals when we were there but they were setting up for a grand scale folk festival starting in June.

I have to go back to work tomorrow but my brain wants to be anywhere south of Delaware.

Atlanta is a happening place! Be sure you have a piece of pecan pie (I believe they pronounce it "pee-can" there)! Pecan pie has always been my favorite, and the best I've ever had was at a restaurant in Atlanta (wish I could remember the name, it was in an historic building- the White House or something like that).
    :)

Sounds like Diane would make a great tour guide! Have fun at the OAA meeting!

Heading for the cabin in the mountains of Pennsylvania (Blossburg). Turn on the DTV (don't have indoor plumbing, but I got a dish!), sit on the back porch and shoot at cans all day....ok, maybe get on the 4-wheeler for a couple of hours.:D

Throw in some funnel cakes or smores (mmmm, or Potato Rolls, or Middleswarth BBQ chips), and I'm there!

PS- Blossburg? Okay, where is that from Harrisburg?

Williamsport is the home of Little League Playoffs. It is 1.5 hours North of Harrisburg. Will go to Lock Haven 20 miles west next week.

Me, we are vacationing at a beach house on the dunes in Fenwick, Delaware located just north of Ocean City MD. Can't wait!

Bev, your answer didn't help much; I know where Philly, Pittsburg, Lancaster, and Valley Forge are, oh and Hershey, mention anywhere else and not reference one of those and I don't have a clue, ha ha, guess I could look at a map? Pennsylvania is sooo beautiful though!

It is a beautiful state, isn't it? ;)
If you have been to Hershey, you've been to Harrisburg (for all intents and purposes). Harrisburg is about 15 miles west of Hershey in southcentral Pennsylvania.

Williamsport (and therefore, Blossburg, it would appear) is in northcentral Pennsylvania (in other words, in the middle of pretty much nowhere- which is a nice place to be when on vacation, IMHO). A little further up to the west would be State College (home of the Penn State Nittany Lions). Now that I know where it is, EyeMan can expect a knock on his door one evening...

Just wondering, Bev... does Chuck Rhodes still do the weathercast each evening?

    Hey Pete,

Thanks for answering the question. Bye the way,
Chuck Rhoades still does the weather. He is a great guy!

Pete: Just make sure that you're knocking on the RIGHT door. Some of them ol' Hillbillys are friendly....and some will just shoot ya'.

Bev: So when get off Fenwick Island, do you hang out at Big Peckers or do you drive all the way down to the Bearded Clam!
......stop by the Boardwalk and see if Polock Johnny's is still there!:bbg:

Isn't anyone coming to Cape Cod????

While its true I will visit Atlanta for the first time this July, I will also be spending the majority of the summer on Cape Cod.(majority of the winter too!!) Please consider dropping by and saying Hello!

Diane, I'm going to be bringing i'connell if he can get time off from whatever he winds up doing this summer.Sounds like Atlanta has plenty to see. Do you know if it will be possible to get a comprehensive tour?I know I'll have an all day meeting on Sat and some of Friday will be taken as well.It would be nice to be able to hook him up with a tour so he won't be too bored!

Actually, there was at one time a toss up between going to the Richard Petty Driving School in Orlando or the Teddy Kennedy Driving School in Hyannisport for a fun vacation.

    Hi eyeman-

    Harry,
Many years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Cape Cod for the Fourth of July weekend. I drove to the tip of the Cape, where I believe there is a place called "Provincetown" (or something like that). As I recall, there were some very interesting ladies- er gentlemen- well, interesting people anyway! Does the Cape usually host such a large number of these people, or did I just wander in during a TV convention??? Actually, it reminds me of the party we saw at the Marriott in NYC! Who knows, maybe the lady in the leapordskin top... hmmmm.
    :p
Really though, we spent the day on a great beach at the tip of the Cape (we only saw the "Private Beach- No Tresspassing signs as we were leaving... seems the gate had been left open and you couldn't see the sign from the outside- the dunes were awesome).

Deleware has a nice beach called "Lewe's Beach," Virginia Beach is pretty nice, Ocean City offers lots to do, and Daytona during Spring Break is something everyone should do at least once!

Considering all the places one can go in America, however, I would pit Pennsylvania's history, variety, and natural beauty against anywhere (as usual, without bias)!
