What is a normal Opticians Duties/Tasks?

Hello could someone please tell me what the duties are of a normal optician? What their expect rate of pay is (salary or commission?) And what is required to be an optician? Is it just taking the ABO?

Thank you in advance and sorry for being a newbie.....

Thank you for the responses, and I apologize or using the word normal I didn't mean to stir up the water cooler.

What I was really after is what you guys (in the industry) think the duties of an optician are, how an optician got to where they are, and what they should make?

I am looking to hire one and I just want to be prepared.

    Thanks.

If it's a woman: Whatever is in the "job description."
If it's a man: Whatever is needed, including emptying the trash and changing light bulbs.

That covers such a giant range of duties, pay rates and can lead to a tremendous amount of obnoxious replies! lol Can you be more specific? Are you writing a pamphlet for an optical school, a job service looking to place opticians or something entirely different?
An optician's duties will vary greatly depending on the size and type of the practice, the nature of the practice , < The dreaded retail chain vs the brick and mortar store.> are they the owner, or just a lackey of the owner/optometrist etc etc. There's just no easy answer for this one. In the simplest terms, an optician sells, fits, fabricates and dispenses eyewear. This could include contact lenses as well as eyeglasses etc. As for the pay.... what're you offering? :P

I am strictly a boutique selling eyewear and rx to high street traffic. I was thinking 10-20% of the total sale. That why I was wondering if this is fair or not.... Im just starting so I do not have the money to pay someone a salary.... yet.

Chip, that's just offensive. I owned my own shop. I changed ligtbulbs, cleaned bathrooms, edged lenses, cleaned the edger and the buckets, swept up and dusted, bought the inventory, did the books, fitted and dispensed the eyewear and EVERYTHING else that was needed to run a business.
That mysoginistic crap just doesn't fly anymore.

    +1

Shall I describe for you the trip I made to the restroom with the patient who had dementia this week? Dropped off by her care provider for us to "deal with" the poor lady couldn't manage personal hygiene for herself. Oh and I managed to take out my own trash that day, just like everyday. Thanks.

Why are you hiring an optician? How long have you been in business?
