I give them their pd, both monocular and binocular, then ask them to bring their purchase by so I can verify that they got what they ordered. Sometimes I win (they hate their glasses) and sometimes I lose (they love their glasses.) Either way, I get them to come back in the store at least once more. If they hate their online glasses, I find out why and sell them on what I have that's better, more comfortable, better quality, whatever.
Online people are in business to make money the same as everyone else. I tell the patient that online has limitations that I don't have. Online optical companies can't let the patient try on the frames to see how they really look and feel. It is very hard to tell what to choose when all you have is a photo.
I do let them make their own mistakes in frame selection.
