Information on Bifocal/Trifocal lenses and use in vocations.

Asked recently about suggested type of trifocal for an airline pilot.

    Thank you for everyones help.

Any suggestions where I can purchase a book or download info
on different types of bifocals and trifocals and there uses?

Also any suggestions where I can obtain similar information on current
PALs apart from manufacturers biased guides?

Try websites of lens manufacturers. They all have this information. We no longer think you are an optical dispenser, perhaps a dispenser in some bar. But anyone who does not know the above certianly is not an optical dispenser, optician, lab rat or in the optical business. Please change your occupation to consumer.

    Thank you for your reply.

Perhaps you should not jump in with both feet before you make conclusions.
Is it so important that my professional qualifications are what I have said they are.
To question ones integrity is a tad sad?
I merely was looking for some advice.

For your information not that I need to justify myself to you.

I am an Optician qualified and registered with the GOC.

I have been involved in refractive surgery for last 10 years in UK and merely wanted some information
on how optics works within USA to freshen my views .

It is only recently that i have started paying more interest in the Optical shops that I currently have
and was looking for some dialogue at night time before I go to bed.
Sorry for asking in future I will not bother.

Don't let it get to you, Snoozy. There's not really a personality test to become an optician and there is a surprising amount of "Optical Eliteism" on this board. Most of the folks are ok and there are some EXTREMELY knoweledgeable people on this board, but a few just like to talk down to us little people.... God forbid we ask a question without waiting for them to vollunteer the info.... :P

To be knowledgeable in one's chosen profession is to be admired.

But to come across with cockyness and arrogance is despised.

So weather your information is right or wrong, how you deliver your knowledge is what is remembered.

One must remember that not everyone can be a "wise man" and the wise man is wiser by being tolerant of those who are not.

I don't really get this, Optiboards has been ready to jump on people who claim to be optical ECP's for less. Here we have someone asking the most basic questions, claiming to be an experienced licensed dispener, and I get the axe.
Seems similar to the guy who claimed to be an OD and asked how would he adapt to first time glasses in bifocals.
Now I guess I'm wrong but his is the kind of question I would expect from someone who got his first job in the industry two weeks ago.

Chip i agree with you, any optician should know this information. You might have been a little hard on him but you are right about he should know those answers. This site is for people in the optical industry and not for people just wanting optical info.

Yes Chip you are correct you just do not get it.

Perhaps in another 50 years in Optics the penny will drop.

The question to you may seem puerile so I will elaborate.

In college in UK main dispensing book was Ophthalmic lenses by Jailie.

I have been out of dispensing for 10 years and realised when I visited USA
with regards Lasik when working in refractive laser market USA was more
advanced than UK / European market.

As most people using forum seem to be from the US I basically wanted to understand what text books
were recommended and read in USA.
Does this mean I should be castigated and informed to alter tick box from Optician to consumer then next post
told we know Snoozy is not an optician?

Perhaps a little more etiquette indeed manners are required and sometimes better basically just keep ones thoughts to oneself
as from time to time one can be made to look very silly.

Once more Thank you to majority of people who have simply answered the question without becoming personal.

This site is a community. It is designed for us to educate and commisserate with each other. The poster asked a simple question with simple straightforward answers. Belittling was not, and never is, called for. Just because people "jump down the throat" of supposed "offenders" does not make it acceptable to do so.

This place makes me so angry sometimes. This nonsense is why so many people have left this site in the past year, and why I only check it once or twice a week. The snobbery on display is often appalling.
I'm Andrew Hamm and I approve this message.

I really dont know why such a question does can become the fuse for an OptiBoard revolution so that the usual complainers have grounds for more unpleasant remarks and lousy language..

snoozy ...............There are plenty optical educational websites where you can just about get any information you want or need. I compiled a list with now 887 websites listed. If you go to the section "Educational sites" you will find plenty information you are looking for. You can find it at: http://optochemicals.com/web_listing.htm

Scroll down the page to the section "Indexing Educational, History in Optics, Optical Association Websites".
I have started that page in 2004 and it has represented some continuos never ending work.
