These are not term used in the USA. I have never heard these terms used going back fifty years.
This is an easy one Dick!
Shoulder; Temples so ridiculously long that once bent, dangle 6 inches bellow the back of the ear.
Shoe; The part of the eye wear that gets stepped on when one leaves their glasses on the floor.
Collar; The part of the frame used to strangle a patient when they insist their glasses are crooked (when they are not).
Tongue of Earl; What Earl's wife uses to clean her rimless glasses.
Any more questions?
Shoulder: Mounting at the temporal and nasal side if lens on three piese rimless mount.
Collar: Metal or plastic piece used to cushion frame to screw.
Shoe: Part of lens mount that goes against lens.
Ring of Earl: Haven't got a clue.

They are the parts of the strap area of old style metal rimless frames. See System for Ophthalmic Dispensing, Second Edition, page 13 or in the Third Edition, page 10.
Show off's! :bbg: I was with Dick...I've not heard those terms.
Just remember, you'll never be too experienced in this business to learn something new!
or old.
Talk about useless information! Can't imagine why they would ask this.
Next question should be, "What is correct way to score a lens before cribbing?"
- Optician
- Frame Maker/Designer
- Teacher of the art of crafting handmade eyewear.
Actually while I don't see much being made or offered made this way. I do see a lot of people in movies or high government officials (many governments) wearing these types of three piece, no nose pad frames. Also in this business everything comes back sooner or later.
A little history never hurt anyone. Shoot someone might ask you a question like this and you could answer it, it would make you appear smarter than those that couldn't.

The tongue (or ear) is that portion of the strap that extends from the shoe, contacting the surface of the lens. Sometimes there are two tongues per strap, one on each lens surface with a screw passing through both tongues & the lens to hold the lens in place.
