    Genius alert!!!

My receptionist just received this phone call:

I need to see the doctor because I have a pet tarantula and his stomach hairs got into my eyes. Yes, I wear contacts, but no I did not take them out because I have very bad vision and I do not own glasses.

    Ummmm.....yeah.

Anyone dumb enough to keep a pet spider is dumb enough to sleep in thier contacts. Anyone who has very bad vision without a back up pair of glasses is dumb enough to have a pet spider. Thier optician (or other CL merchant type) has obviously missed an opportunity here, so they aren't the brightest either. There is no cure for stupid.

Since the tiny Tarantula hairs are barbed, its possilble the best course is not to take her contacts out herself so you should ask the Dr before you recommend that. Any taratula hair stuck in the epithelium could possibly damage the cornea if forced laterally by an improper or clumsy removal of her lenses under stress increasing her irritation, some patients rub and dig to get their lenses out which may not be good.

The barbs will also dig in deeper the longer she waits for treatment. Bllinking could force the hairs deeper too so she may benefit keep her eyes closed until she gets in. The medical diagnosis is Ophthalmia Nodosa. I imagine the Dr will irrigate to remove any hairs that have not yet lodged in, the rest are usually treated with topical steroids with a high degree of success.

Eye protection is recommended when handling North and South American Tarantulas.

Down Heah and when I lived in Texas we used a long stick, or shotgun for trantulas. Same for Diamondbacks, scorpions, and other poisonus or dangerous vermin.

In the immortal words of Bruce Willams, the financial adviser: "Don't love anything that can't love you back."

In 1999, the MD I previously worked for wrote a paper on this very subject.
