are swirl marks on new lenses common? - Essilor SV 360 specifically

    Hi there,

I've just got myself a pair of SV 360. When I shine a very bright white LED torch at the lens and look at them at an angle there appear to be a lot of circular swirl marks. These marks aren't visible when the lenses are held up against a normal light bulb (as when we clean/wipe the lenses).

Since these lenses are sold as 'scratch proof' with the Crizal Forte coating, why would these swirl marks exist on them? Furthermore, what could have caused them? They look as though someone's ground them with an orbiting polishing machine like the ones used on a car's surface.

    Thanks.

Had a bit of trouble with this with local Essilor labs and seen some patients have seen us after getting frustrated at other opticals due to same.
The ones I have seen had to be held in sunlight at a precise hard to locate angle. Just used Zeiss for replacement and eliminated the problem. Some of these patient's had re-makes at the origional store, same Essilor top of the line lens done 3 times.

funny you should mention orbital car polisher, thats basically the same way the lenses are polished after surfacing. The swirl marks could be caused by a few things, bad stroke on the polisher, bad stroke on the finer (if they use one), or not polished long enough. its all essilors fault!!!

These sound like the fitting marks.

Thanks for your responses guys. To be honest, I can't be bothered to take them back as I had to wait 3 weeks for this pair of lens to be made. These are SV 360 hence they took longer. The swirl marks can't be spotted under normal light so I guess they are really fine. When used normally, the lenses are 99.9% faultless. Its coatings are in great condition too.

By the way, is it ok to make frame adjustments now? or do the frames need to be properly adjusted prior to doing the Essilor EyeCode measurements?

    Thanks.

We all know what the problem with the lenses is. One other problem is that you are a consumer, which makes these posts out of line. You as a consumer are allowed to post here on NON OPTICAL points. That's the rules you agreed to when you registered.

I don't get why patients spend the money on glasses and then if they have a problem, they resort to asking professionals on a forum what we think the problem is...

Is that not what we get paid to do IN THE OFFICE?
