    Coastal Contacts Grows Eyeglasses Sales 117% in Q2, 2011 Exceeding $10 Million

    VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 11, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Coastal Contacts Inc. (TSX:COA) (Stockholm:COA) the world's largest online retailer of eyeglasses and contact lenses, announced today that for the second fiscal quarter ending April 30, 2011, worldwide eyeglasses sales exceeded $10 million, an increase of 117% over Q2 2010, and a sequential increase of 62% over Q1 2011.

    In its North American business unit, sales of individual frames grew to approximately 162,000 units in the second quarter of 2011 compared with approximately 48,000 units in the same period in 2010, an increase of 238%. Of the 162,000 units shipped, approximately 28,000 were to returning eyeglasses customers and 134,000 were to new eyeglasses customers.

    "Coastal continues to experience robust growth in its eyeglasses category," stated Roger Hardy, Coastal's Founder and CEO. "Most encouraging is the large number of returning glasses customers who are driving growth. The value proposition is resonating with customers and beginning to create a strong annuity of repeat order business that will help fund our growth and investment in this very exciting category."

    Coastal expects to provide full unaudited financials for fiscal Q2, 2011 in early June.

    I predict the eyewear sales unit will level off in the next couple of years and become flat with a possible decline. In my opinion, at that manufacturing volume, quality and delivery time is just not sustainable to keep pace.

    On the other hand, the contact lens unit will continue to grow.

    In the meantime ,our laws are being violated in Ontario and possibly other provinces . Whether you think it will level off or not does not matter . The fact is our regualtory Colleges and the Minister of Health are sitting on their backsides doing nothing . They are being paid to do a job that they are refusing to do . They have more excuses why something can not be done then Carter has liver pills . Members across the country would be better off paying some people to stay home and not come into work at all than have them come to work to accomplish nothing . All they know how to do is stall and make excuses . Totally useless accomplishments and a total waste of members money .

    I predict the exact opposite. I have been watching the on line opticals for the last 3 years and have only seen some temporary slow downs, otherwise it just about seems to be full steam forward, and the optical retail ECP's who had all the time and facilities to get together and find some type of counter solution, have done no such thing.

    The largest of the big discounters in Canada has been knighted by the Queen, government officals turn their back to their own laws protecting the profession. Some Opticians only complain about what is going on without support from the others.

    No other optical websites show such good traffick ratings as the top on line opticals. They are still growing rapidly and I do not think they will level out and reduce their sales, and the economy is not helping either.

    And they will continue to do nothing for two reasons...; they haven't a clue what to do, where to begin or how much it will cost. Secondly, it is these same individuals that continue to have their hands out and collect our membership fees while continuing to remain motionless and silent.

    Our biggest problem isn't even coastal contacts; we all don't need to look any further than our own mirrors at ourselves. Except for the couple of optiboarders trying to rally the troops and attempt to take unified action, we also all sit silent and watch the horror show unfold - what a pathetic display...

    Lastly, from a vendor standpoint, we should all be boycotting these companies supplying products to coastal - but we don't...we continue to follow our same daily routines and place our orders. Roger Hardy is simply filling a market niche, albeit legal or not, he is 'Winning' and is leaving Charlie Sheen in the dust.

    Yes Chris I understand, however, referring to Coastal alone, they will meet production critical mass soon. Then what? Another $5 million investment in Satisloh equipment (owned by Essilor)?, or Gerbur Coburn (owned by Essilor) to keep pace?

    Or, perhaps they will be acquired by Essilor to obtain the market share and tie it into their framesdirect venture while putting their famous spin on it to counter the negative industry perception? You mean we can't continue to have our cake and eat it?

    I do anticipate that many more of these online retailers will pop up due to the demand and the fact Coastal is not yet being challenged, both legally and competitively.
