    lens surfacing equipment

    Hi,

I have a friend trying to to equip his optical shop in Uganda with a surfacing lab. Problem is that they use 90% glass and most, if not all, new generators sold only cut plastic materials.

Does anybody know of companies that deal with exporting decent quality used surfacing equipment that will process glass? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    ~thanks!

You are probably going to be looking at something from Gerber/Coburn.

Google "2113 generator" and "toric surfacer".

Thanks for leads. You guys are the best!

As for "normal" optics; Uganda is very dusty and people can't afford to keep replacing their glasses due to scratches. They also don't have the legally charged duty to warn issues we have grown accustomed to. It wouldn't be possible to "phase out" glass when 90% of sales is glass. Additionally they don't chem temper the lenses either and have had no issues since opening in 1976!

As a side note; don't you remember checking the optics of glass lenses with a lensometer? Those mires were so crisp and sharp compared to poly and high index!!

With all that said, I have only dispensed one pair of glass lenses in the past 2 years.

Hmmm. Our lab is running about 150 glass jobs a day..... I guess some people will take clear optics over "nornal optics" :p
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

You should have a look in the used machine market, where to buy either a V 50/V75 or Tormatic generator when only making glass lenses.
This is an efficient method to do normal rx-production. Also check ouwhether you find some Toro-X for smoothing and polishing and a used blocker 2000.
