They did this in Edmonton...3000 free pairs of basic glasses. The younger crowd tends to fall for this but definitely an aggressive business model. Who could afford to slay this dragon, certainly NOT the Opticians Association.

The Opticians and Optometrists Associations took how many years and how many millions of $$ to bring down the Great Glasses chain? The Ontario Provincial Government needs to help snuff this out, unlike the health minister of BC and his party that is receiving financial contributions from coastal contacts.

Why can they get away with this when real optical s can't? What is the college doing to stop this? Why do we follow any rules if they don't? Might be time to force the government to act by not following rules and not paying our optician fees in the future. Very frustrated with how out college just sits back.

I'm not in Ontario.....but I can relate to the Provincial inaction on many fronts. Maybe it's time for something drastic, like a national inaction Day, or perhaps, it is time to revive the Canadian Guild of Dispensing Opticians? Let's face it....with most provinces the associations live and breathe the "healthcare provider" mantra.
you're calls to action are all very noble, but I think trying to fight the onliners at this point is a losing battle. :(
The opticians in BC fought coastal/clearly, and they won! But then Kevin Falcon came along and helped them out and changed the law, effectively undoing the court order against coastal. It's a free for all now in BC; if I were a BC optician I probably wouldn't bother maintaing my registration either. Lets see, being a registered optican in BC means that you can fit contacts and do a sight test - big deal; anyone can legally dispense glasses, ANYONE.
The problem however is if you're located in another province, the college can and likely will come after you if you drop your registration and continue to practice.

If they actually are able to give away 10,000 pairs in 30 days and if the people who receive these were to have actually been in the market to purchase these then one might construe that each person might have spent between 100.00 to 200.00 dollars a pair on a normal purchase , therfore the market place has been affected by a conservative low of 1 million dollars to perhaps 2 million dollars .
At the high end then a 10,000 pair give away offer would have exceeded all of COO's revenue base for an entire year . It would be hard to believe that COO would sit and do nothing about this . Surely they must realize the impact of this .
It would seem on the surface that opticians might want to consider a lawsuit .
i think of it this way, having to get a FREE pair is like no effort no money works great for everyone, I think those people who get the FREE pair most likely never would've gone to get a new pair from a local optician atleast not all 10,000 people. So i'm thinking its the people who most likely already have a pair of glasses just got offered a FREE pair would jump aboard because its FREE.
I dont know what to think anymore. Here you guys have been complaining for the last few years about the associations, the registrars and lots more. All good stuff and postings, but where has it gotten you? As far as I can see you are still at the same spot tha a few years ago.
So the approach does not work..........................you got to find another way. OptiBoard is superb means of communication, but how many of you Ontario or even Candian guys are members? And how many of these members do make post's...........not many in my book.
The threat of the on line opticals is real.......dont kid yourself..........they are undermining the conventional optical trade, from wholesale to Labs and the retail stores. Everybody will suffer in their wake.
I would start by getting all your professional friends to sign up at the OptiBoard and start to participate.
I agree the position on this whole issue is static and nobody really gives a damn anymore since it has gone on way too long - it is a shame really. However, I have to disagree that the OB avenue is a viable one to spread the word and awareness.
In theory, it is a great method and extremely cost effective (free) to build that bandwagon and give the megaphone a toot....however, with due respect, the Canadian forum has been the same members with the same posts for ions now. With the thousands of Canadian opticians out there (more than 2000 in Ontario alone), the Canadian OB membership is extremely flat with very few members as it is.
Although I can't stand Greenpeace, assemble a group of other unemployed opinionated people and take a page from their book - chain yourselves to the front door of the COO. It's right down the street from the CBC and I'm sure would gain some sort of attention.
