...I quit
No, I'm not doing anything dumb, I'm just giving up on the optical industry.

Don't drink, even if I did I couldn't afford a martini on my income.
Fair enough, so what pushed you over the edge?

That's sad....to give up on the industry! It's a conclusion that you must have given a lot of thought to. Why?
You are a person of many talents. It will be sad not to see you use the optical based ones. However I know whatever you do, you will make a difference.

Sad thing I know how he feels. I consider myself an excellent optician but todays optical only rewards the rich and powerful. I'm on the decision path now and may also throw in the towel after 25 yrs. I love what I do but I have a family that I have to put first!!
Hey Jacqui.................................would it help upping your mood if we re-open the eyeoverheard site ???????????????????????

You sure it's not just the cold up there. Move South. Business isn't any better but the people are nicer and the climate is a lot nicer.
Its sad, I have only been in the business for 2 year. I love the career path but have seen quite a few people who have been in for a while give up on it. Mostly its when they go from private practice to the Outlet / chain world. Best of luck to you mate in what ever you decide. Keep your head up!

Great! Now you can move down here and help me!!
Well don't quit until you find something better at least. I know well the feeling after 32 years in this business, it's not what it used to be. I still love the work I do and I'm making decent money but if I can do it ten more years I'll be surprised. Coming here helps as does a glass of red at the end of the day and a good man who lets me vent all I want.
Everyone in the know know that opticians drink....my newbie in our other office "gets it" now why, at the end of the day, I'm always saying "I need a wine"!!!!! Good luck Jacqui if you do through with this. I too, after 30 years, am not enamored with the way busines is going in optical but am, fortunately, in a good enough working environment that I can go another 6 years until I retire and toss in the towel. :(
Jacqui, you seem to be a very skilled individual. Before you really hang em' up, dump your skills and knowledge into a few folks. The industry needs folks who know how to do it right.
Florida is a very nice place with no state income tax.

So much for those wonderful articles they used to write about you and your charity work... It can seem like a thankless business, but not always. Did you see KCount's thread on "why we do this"?

The gators are only in rivers and lakes also Gainesville, not at your condo at the beach. Hurricanes, you can run away from those, it's been a quiet few years lately.
Good luck in your new endeavours!

I R SAD .
I've learned a bunch from you and would gladly accept a direct to brain transfer of knowledge.
Ah well, in the end you have to do what you feel is best for you. However, if you'd like a fresh start in an INDEPENDENT wholesale lab, give me a call :). It may not be Florida, but it's certainly not any colder here than where you are now....
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
That kills me. I would follow you around forever like an attention-starved puppy if I worked in your office. Please don't, because now I am less sure about continuing my education. If the tried and true can't do it, why should I even bother? I want so badly to do this job right and I need people like you to teach me how it's properly done!
