The National Academy of Opticianry has a couple of books, that you should get. Contact them at 800-229-4828. Opthalmic Dispensing Review Book and a few more. Michael DiSanto's TOPS book is a good source. Workbooks are great.
Also, I thought they were out of print, but American Optical Corporation had a series of books from years ago that I studied when I was studying for licensure in Georgia, and I've found out that they are still in print. They are great. If you have difficulty finding them, e-mail me and I'll try to put you on to where you may obtain them.
Best of luck to you.
Diane
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
If you are willing to spend a little money www.opticaltraining.com has a wonderful tape and book kit. I used the kit to pass the NCLE and a TOPS manual to pass the ABO. I wish I had bought the tapes for the ABO as well. Remember you can ask us questions as well....Lord knows I did and everyone on here was extremely helpful. Good luck if I can help in anyway you can e-mail me...unfortunately I am NOT a wiz in my field...hey I am honest!!

hi, i am also taking the abo on may 15th. i am very nervous. i purchased from the abo a series of books and tapes and the abo/ncle review book. they were a little costly, but worth it. if you are taking it on the 15th, you probably don't have time to get them. my mentor has told be to know basic anatomy of they eye, apprentice rule, focal length, how to find sphere power in 90 and 180 meridians, vertical compensation, frame adjustments, and ansi standards. if you have any questions feel free to ask me and i will try to help.:)
If it were me (Having taken and past the ABO 3 time ) I would contact Mike Disanto directley. He is a member of opti-board and I have found his material very consise. Also just a hint, make sure you understand HIPPA and record keeping. Let us know how how you do!:D

Hi there, I'm also taking the ABO's in May, & am enrolled in the Career Progression Program. I've been in the industry for close to 14 yrs. (better late then never I guess to become licensed right? lol). Anyway, what I wanted to tell you was, if you need any help with any formula's or what not, I've been a certified tech for Lenscrafters in NY for close to 8yrs. so if you need any help or just would like to talk about the test or optics, I'd love to hear from you. You can feel free to e-mail me at Lyrix76@aol.com, Good luck to you & stay well,
Carrie Palumbo

Dear all!

Dear all!
I am new to the sight. I am a Russian trained ophthalmologist, want to be an optician. What should I start with? Can I take a test now or should I work as a tech first, for how long?
You were an Ophthalmologist? An actual Medical Dr. for the eye and you want to become an Optician? Well there are several study guides but to take the test all you need to do is contact the ABO and register.
I have to say that Mike De Santo's TOPS book is the best. I used it to study for the exam in May, having just started in Optical in January of 2006, and passed with a score of 80. I also studied with a group of other opticians from work, but the book helped immensly.
Incidentally, I want to thank EVERYONE on here for being so helpful - your experience, as well as the study materials, helped me pass the exam. Consequently I have left "the empire" and gone to work in a busy private practice. Just started yesterday. Lord - now I have to learn materials again (or for the first time - LOL).
I have a variety of options ( books - video ). Very good -- focused on test.
