    Angry Base Curve Lens Reference?

Anyone know how to contact the Base Curve Lens Reference people? The phone number on basecurve.com is disconnected and their March 2002 update to their software kills the database.(fun-fun-fun time of reinstalling from scratch, re-going through all the old updates, then 3 hours later  getting back to the March 2002 update and it killing the database a second time).

I've emailed their support, but am scared that since the phone number doesn't work that they might be out of business. Has anyone heard anything?

Information(SBC's) can't find 'em either. Double grrr...

They make a lens searching software, so you can look up available lenses based on criteria(manufactor, base curve, add, etc). www.basecurve.com is their website. I still haven't heard back from the email I sent 'em. *sigh*

    Update...

Still haven't heard anything, no replies to either their info or service email addresses. Phone number still disconnected.

Guess another company bit the dust or something.

    NXTwoThou:
First of all, I apologize for the difficulty you've had in updating your Lens Reference program. We did find a problem with the March update and my developers have built a custom CD for you containing all updates through April.

Secondly, we are still here, but our company is going through some structural changes at this time. Technical support issues will not be handled by telephone, but by email for the time being. The method of updating is being looked at as well. Posting the updates on our website is convenient, but difficult because of the many changes our lens data goes through each month. We try to keep the size of the update file at a manageable level while containing all the detailed information needed. The price of keeping this file small is a longer processing time on the user's system, although we have not experienced running times as long as you've described on our test machines. Can you send me more specifics on your system, such as processor speed and amount of memory?

We realize that having to run each update in order is not ideal, but again, keeping the file size as small as possible was one of our objectives. We would like the user to be able to download the latest update only, but each file would get larger as time went on. We are working on a way to make this work, perhaps by giving you a choice of which file to download - a small file containing only that month's updates, or a larger one containing all updates to that point. This should be resolved over the next couple of months.

Again, please accept my apologies not only for the trouble you've had, but for taking so long to get back with you. We also found that our info@ and service@ mailboxes were not being forwarded to the right people. A new email address has been set up for technical support issues (support@basecurve.com), or you can mail me directly.

    Sincerely yours,

The system is a Duron 750, 512Mb of ram, RAID1 40 gig drives, Windows 98.

The problem was that after the march update was installed, it destroyed the datafiles. So I had to clear the entire thing off the computer, reinstall from the original CD we where sent, then start with the August update and work my way forwards. When each one takes 30 some odd minutes to complete, you hit 3 hours really fast.

We'll wait for the CD that was sent to our regular email address and hopefully that'll take care of it. You can imagine our terror when the phone number didn't work and none of the emails where returned(but we got email confirmation that the emails had been received automaticaly) and the patch hosed everything.
