    Confused 1.67 or 1.74...safety?

Hey guys, may be a stupid question but i havent done this in so long...

For a liberty sports frame i have a really high myop at -10.00, cant wear contacts so this is the only option now.

Can I use 1.67 or even 1.74 and still conform to ansi safety standards? or poly and trivex ONLY??

    Thanks guys -Phil

You should be able to as long as the lenses are safety thickness. Which will kind of defeats the purpose of higher indexes.... For better optics I'd go with a 1.60 or Trivex, especially since you probably aren't putting A/R on them....
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

Trivex can be done at 2.0 CT, the others would have to be made at 3.0 CT. Besides your customer will like the better optics of Trivex, even at that power. It takes a -12.00 before the extra thickness of Trivex equates to extra weight, so they will still be lighter weight.

The Z87-1 and Z87-2 standards are thickness standards, not material standards. Go with what will be cosmetically best. I have finished my fair share of glass safety specs when I was in the wholesale sector.

    Z87-1 3.0 minimum thickness
    Z87-2 2.0 minimum thickness

I hope you're not doing glass safety at 2.0.

I don't do glass anymore. But when I was doing it it was all Z87-1 @3.0 min. thick.

Good, because the new standards are still 3.0, except for Trivex and Poly, which is 2.0.
