    Best lenses for golfing

    Hi there,
Can anyone recommend a brand of single vision or progressive golfing lenses that works well? What material and coating (ie. freeform, trivex, poly)? My patient thinks polarized C is too dark so drive wear coating is probably too dark. What color would you recommend also?

    - Brown or Green Grey (grey will be too dark)
    - Backside AR
    - Not necessarily polarized as it takes away from being able to see the grain of the grass during putting

I second Drivewear. They are, however, polarized, which bothers some golfers (others swear by it).

Transitions SolFX are good, and Rudy Project USA makes an excellent golf lens.

Golfing magazines (pretty much all sport-specific magazines) will recommend contrast-enhancing colors; brown over grey, or even further toward amber, rose, orange, vermillion. These colors will help you see the edges of objects, enhance your depth of field, but will distort your color vision. I golf with grey lenses because I want to see green grass, not red-green grass.

Depends on the quality of the golfer. The debate involves polarized or not and ability to read greens. I personally prefer green gradient tinted. The gradient tint encourages a chin up stance, for better shoulder turn, when addressing the ball.

There's mention of golfing lenses in this thread as well: http://www.optiboard.com/forums/show...ighlight=SOLFx

NEOX has a Green SOLFx available, which is said to be good for golf.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

I remember reading that green lenses are the best for golf, but I personally think the melanin color works the best.

Truth is if any particular color consistently made the game better virtually every pro on tour worldwide would wear it.

That said- I'll go with Drivewear as well if I have to pick one.

Btw- Did you ever see what a top tier PGA pro gets compensated when he endorses a brand name sunglass?

Golfers are so weird. I have a few avid golfers in my practice, and the moan and groan, but will spend an unlimited amount on anything that makes their 'game' a little better.

The absolute BEST progressive for golfers is the FAIRWAY by DEFINITY

This lens is fantastic! Flash mirrored AR coated, it is a photochromic version of the DEFINITY. Its color when darkened is a muted brown, highlighting contrasts on the golf course. Although reasonably expensive, most golfers I play with have more invested in their drivers than this lens costs. The feature that makes this lens the BEST, is its "Ground View Advantage". I am sure if you go to their website it will all be explained.

PS I am a DEFINITY user with no stake whatever in this lens. I am not paid by Essilor or DEFINITY. I promise you this is a great product and will do what I say it will do.

I should make a survey on the golfcourse my house sits in Florida and find out if Harry has any surpporters. Will be there next week.
Of course it makes sense if you look at the lens and use a deep enough frames you can even detect the ball on the ground,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,like the old small seg fused bifocals in the old days.

We've had success with the Fairway. The color is great, the vision is great. We have a pl/+2.00 in a sport frame to use as a demo with a golf green floor mat and a putter, and once they try it, they buy it.

Does anyone have any experience with that "Golfer's" seg? It's a 15-mm round seg that you would use in one lens only, positioned off to the temporal side, for reading scorecards without otherwise interfering with distance vision. It is a bit "old school," but a friend of mine down at the University of Houston College of Optometry swears by them.

    Best regards,

Did lots of them, all long ago. Kryptoks (or Tillyer D's) front surfaced as described above (I don't know of a CR39 small round seg - do you?). For a righty, seg goes in OD, behind the swing. Near performance was so lousy you couldn't read the menu in the 19th Hole bar.

Yeah, I think Aire-O-Lite still makes a "Golfer's Classic" round-15 seg in hard resin. Probably not available in polarized or anything though.

Actually you could order the backside round from Three Rivers Optical and spin the axis 45 degree's temporally to place the seg. This would allow for polarized, drivewear, what have you. Just a thought.

Harry, "Ground view"?! Really? Have you ever looked at where you would need to fit the seg to get the "Ground view" effect? This was the biggest piece of marketing whooey to come out in the last decade.

    Edit:
I always went with polarized as it let you see the bumps and edys (sp?) of the green, not to mention the blade direction of the grass ( it changes as the day goes on, ya know).

Darryl, I do those fairly often. My doc (UofH grad, go figure) swears by them as well.

Oh, and half of the time, I have patients coming to find me and buy the "golf wear" glasses that I set up for their friends. I have a lot of pts use the drivewear for that purpose. Probably moreso than anything else.
