    Bridge Over Troubled Waters

Does anyone know who did the lead vocals for the old Simon & Garfunkel song, Bridge Over Troubled Waters? Was it just Art Garfunkel (with Paul Simon doing backup vocals), or both Art and Paul doing leads together?

    Best regards,
    Darryl

    Thumbs up Darrel

I always thought that Paul Simon was the lead vocal in Bridge Over Trouble Waters. I'll find out from my wife. She is a music librarian at our public library.

I always thought that Art Garfunkel sang the lead on that one. At least he did in the Concert in Central Park...

    Big Smile Paul Simon

wrote the song. Didn't he perform it at the 911 benefit. I listened to the album and it sure sounds the same as his concert.

    I could be wrong.

Okay, you guys aren't helping much... I already had it narrowed down to either Simon or Garfunkel (or both). ;)

Yes, Simon wrote it. And Garfunkel definitely sang in it as a lead, but I don't know whether Simon sang along with him as another lead (duo) or just did backup vocals or something.

    Best regards,
    Darryl

In the spirit of not being helpful to your quest...

I have no earthly idea who sung the background, but I can tell you that Bridge Over Troubled Waters was one of the songs on the 8-track that Chevy included to demonstrate the stereo in my father's new Monte Carlo (almost positive it was the '73 model).

For anyone chuckling at the memory of having 8 tracks in cars, it will be even more amusing to remember another feature I recall from this auto- some sort of swivelling thing that allowed you to get out of the car easier (as if anyone really needs something like this). The seat, the steering wheel, or both swivelled to allow a "proper" exit, as I recall.

Of course, this information is of no use to Darryl in his noble quest- but then again, neither has any of the other info posted here thus far, so bleagh!

Anyone want to take a guess? You need Real Player to play.

It sounds like all Garfunkel until the end starting with "Sail on ..."

Garfunkel was the lead vocal on all the S&G recordings of this song. In fact for many years Paul Simon refused to sing the song in his solo concerts because he felt he couldn't do it nearly as well as Art.

    Unhappy Steve

I'm just stubborn. When you said it was Garfunkel I wavered in my beleifs. In order to bring down the wall of doubt totally I looked elsewhere on the internet. Yes, I did trust you but my English-German descent overwhelmed me to verify my misgivings.

Stubborn is ok. Heck I married stubborn! Just remember what Paul Simon once wrote:

    Darryl,

I ask this with all due respect. Why has the quest for the lead vocalist on "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" brought you out of the protective bubble known as the Ophthalmic Optics Forum?

    Jo,

Just watch what happens if you post something about the Kurt Russel movie 'Escape from New York!'

It was a trivia question from a home theater sweepstakes entry form. ;)
