Confused Sales Tax for low vision aids

Our optical department sells various low vision aid products ranging from lighted magnifiers to desktop video magnifiers. Our understanding is that if they are not prescribed by a doctor, we are to collect sales tax on those items. We had a patient tell us today that we're not supposed to charge sales tax on low vision products at all. Does anyone have firsthand knowledge on the tax laws concerning low vision aids?

Contact your state revenue department. They are the ones best equipped to answer your question, as it varies from state to state.

I agree with Mike. It's always best to check first but how we handle it is to charge tax on essentially anything that can be purchased without an Rx.

I posted this, went to lunch, and was thinking about it and realized this was a state sales tax issue. Thanks for responding.

My guess is you can call your state tax authority...and you won't find anyone who REALLY knows.
