Stick out tongue Digital 5.0 progressive lens!

I have a friend who asked me how good Digital 5.0 (free-form) progressive lenses are? And I have no idea. Have anyone had pros and cons of Digital 5.0 (free-form) progressive lens. How are they compare to Zeiss, Shamir, and Seiko lenses? Who is the manufacture? Please share. Thanks.

This is an "in-house" (read: Bought) design of Digital Eeyelab in Hawthorne, NY. We'll use this design, and it's SV cousin, when the RX or other parameters lie outside the design specs for other more well known brands. Have had good success with it. Be careful of long corridor situations. This design is like Elastic man, stretching the corridor as long as necessary to fit the specified height. I found it poor for tall "B" sunglass use.

This lens is from Digital eye labs, who is a division of Optical Distributer group (ODG) . The rep told me that this is thier own design. I've never had the guts to try them :D

But when things do go outside the parameters, i use the Seiko freeforms. They seem to have some of the highest powers available.

We use a lot of Ziess GT2 3D and individual. Were were told the mod pal is closest to the Individual. When I called to get a layout chart they sent me a Shamir Autograph II chart. I've had good success with their lenses. Both the Mod Pal and the flex singlevision. Their quality is spot on and turnaround is very fast even with AR

Exactly right, they use a Shamir Autograph II. They have been fantastic for higher cyl jobs (over 6). I have their SV, though I was surprised that they used default panto, wrap and VD....but I was extremely pleased with the lenses. I've tried the individual as well and actually prefrerred the digitial 5.0...maybe I just lucked out.... I do send my high RX/high wrap jobs to them as well though with quite of bit of success....speaking of which....I knew there was one job on my desk I meant to send yesterday....crap.
for glass, i think they use a freedom...but don't quote me on that one! :)

A man went to an eye specialist to get his eyes tested and asked, "Doctor, will I be able to read after wearing glasses?"
"Yes, of course," said the doctor, "why not!"
"Oh! How nice it would be," said the patient with joy, "I have been illiterate for so long."

Don't mean to bring back a dead topic but I order my stock lenses through ODG and my rep was telling me about the mod pal.

It seems to be the right price for the right kind of technology. Any new feedback?

    Happy/ unhappy?

I agree. I am tired of Essilor, Hoya, and Zeiss having soo much control over what I pay. I just wish I could use this lens under VSP but after looking at pricing, I don't see why I cant use it as an out of network and have them pay the same as they were with VSP since its a very large price difference from the Reveal FF and individual but is the mod pal on the same playing field as the individual?

I've used Digital Eye Lab several times for *special* jobs, they actually offer Transitions XtraActive in 1.67, which I can't get from Essilor. All of my patients have done very well with the Digital 5.0 PALs. Also, these guys have amazing turnaround... 2 days for Uncut and they bang out Silhouettes in 3 days! And yes, it was drilled perfectly. :)

The majoirty of my SV FF are done wrap lenses are down through Digital. I like their Digi-Pal 5.0 as well, but speak with Peter Kimmerling when you are ready to order, and he'll interview you and what lenses you like/are successful with, and advise you how to best order this lens. 914-347-7400, x 1139

I was with tri supreme for 10 years and for the last year it has been a total nighmare. They have made countless mistakes and I was tired of it. So i wrote them a goodbye later telling them how there quality of work has down the tubes and they didnt really care too much about loosing me. So Abe Zami had called me when he left tri supreme ans went to work for ODG so I thought it was a great time to get away from the evil empire and I am extremely pleased with service and most of all turn around time. Also my patients are doing great with there digital progressives.

It should be noted that this is a Generic Design, NOT the Autograph II. Digital Eye Lab uses mostly IOT as their generic lens provider now as many other people do (like VSP). IOT makes some very good generic designs that have a similar T shape to the Auto II and Individual, Seiko Succeed, and about a dozen others. The best comparison is tire size, my Continental DWS 245/45/R17s might has the same dimensions as a Pirelli Zero G, and fit on the same wheels, but they are not the same as the DWS.

IOT makes some very decent lenses, but the risks of all generic lenses is that IOT also makes some FF designs that are not much better than grinders (I think they have over 100 now). We have NO idea what design really ends up in the final generic lens. IOT will also customize a lens, modifiy a design, or you can simply buy one of their many stock versions. What ends up in your dispensing table is completely unknown.

Generic lenses are almost never have wearer trialed before launch. Premium lenses always have wearer trials. You have no idea where a lens "breaks", you are beta testing the lens yourself. Its why its they are cheaper.

Many generics don't offer the power compensations, or complex math, that many premium lenses do. Your mileage may vary, it will vary, so in many cases (not specific to DEL) patients often find that higher cyls and corridors narrow faster in generic designs than premium ones. Other posters here have indicated these issues.

Just like any generic product, it can be great product, and a great value, but know what you are getting, and know WHY they are less expensive. There is always a reason. They can have negative consequences as well.

Peter has moved on to another, hopefully better, place. Too bad for Digital Eye.

We have used 100% IOT lenses for the past 2+ years and love the product along with the price. The day of a branded progressive is the same as what SV stock lens are you using; who cares!
I am sad to see folks waste money on big name click fee's that do not provide better quality optics for the patients we serve.

I had one non-adapt because her older pair from me was a Seiko with no compensation while the new IOT had a slightly lower total reading power that she noticed. I ordered a non compensated IOT and she loved them.

IF you talk to your lab folks, they will comfirm that that IOT products work great and a bargain.

Does this mean that you are going to get rid of all your branded frames too? I don't think the Kleenex of lenses is the way to go necessarily... but generic lenses with a no-name AR that is likely ---- is not a good way to differentiate your business... Beyond that, the only thing I really see people loving about the generic products is the price....
