Security Guard at Opticians College Meetings?

I heard from a CAO colleague that one of the optician councilors has been bringing his own security guard to meetings for his personal safety? I wonder if the college is picking up the bill?

Seriously Ontario, you've become the laughing stock of our industry...good on ya!!

That councilor has guts to stand up for right and wrong . Where are the rest of you ?
All of you needed to be at those College meetings to see for yourself , first hand, what goes on there . That councilor stood up for opticians when opticians will not stand up for themselves .

You should be asking what caused that councilor to require a Security guard .

You should also be asking why the College flew people to Geneva , Switzerland and who paid for that . What could Geneva possibly have to do with Ontario realities ?

That individual councilor ain't the problem .

It's the collective mentality of the bunch.
Just yesterday I got a mailer from B&L to attend a seminar being given by B&L with the college president. I though t the College of opticians was against internet sales? but it looks like they're friendlier than they let on.

Does this mean the college president is on B&L payroll?

I guess internet contact lenses are here to stay!

From a cope prespective speakers charge a fee for their time and generally provided a per diem for expenses. The fee generally ranges from $500 to $2500, plus expenses for a days work. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the opticians president falls into this category as well.

The President is a very experienced contact lens fitter and mentor. Would you want anyone less to speak and teach ? His time is worth something , just the same as experienced optometrists and ophthalmologists speak and tour to teach others.

People elect to pay for this course . It is your choice to do so or not. It is not connected with the College and you need to retract your comment and apologize for that insinuation.

Internet sales are here to stay because of the total apathy of Eye Care Professionals to stand up against the Colleges inactions .

I would question the mental health of an individual who felt compelled to bring a security guard to a meeting. My life is worth more to me. if i felt threatened i would not go unless it was life or death.

no apology on my part, sorry.
Fact, last year the regulatory colleges took clearly contacts to court. During the trial it came out that no optometrists or opticians work for them; yet the colleges lost. Now you have B&L, who's revenue has multipled since supplying clearly contacts with products for illegal distribution to canadians, and the president of the regulatory college working together.

Something stinks around here and it's not the smell of 1.67 being cut.

This is such a hypocracy. The COO president is in close relations with a board member that is a direct family member of the organization that constantly bashes the COO and has their own hidden agenda. If you don't think for a minute that sensitive, confidential information isn't being exchanged between the two, I have some prime real estate I would like to sell at 70% off - no deed or receipts; and cash only please.

What's next...is the Caan Group and COO going to develop a joint enterprise buying group and also offer CE?

I fully agree, something stinks and you might look into it further by reading the court cases . You might also try asking the respective Colleges to provide some answers. Good Luck because you will quickly see where the problem begins.

I am reminded of a bumper sticker which said "If you do not stand behind & support our troops, feel free to stand in front of them".

An elected official who does not back down and run is an official I would vote for . I respect that in a person . I would have great disrespect for a council that did not deal with and solve that problem . The one that did solve that problenm is our President. It was one of the very first things he did on being elected President. There are now two that I would have respect for and re-elect.

Running is easy , anyone can do it . It takes fortitude to stay in the face of adversity to do the job you were elected to do .

idispense was it the president that brought in the guard?

It is easy to pick on those that run, however in a group of professionals, who are elected by their equals, there really is little room for idiocy that would cause a breakdown so great that someone to bring in a guard. Right or wrong, your council needs to get along and act professional. Mind you, with what I've read about the president, it seems like this behavior starts at the top and trickles its way down the food chain.

ManitobaOD, truly an unwarranted representation of your profession, colleagues and peers. You are easily led, very assuming and seem to believe everything you hear without any validation whatsoever. I have many friends/colleagues close to the COO; none of them have witnessed or even at minimum heard of your ridiculous claim.

In my past 25 years of corporate boardroom meetings (not COO), there have been two occasions where verbal rants escalated resulting in fisticuffs...neither required 'personal security protection' at post meetings.

Its probably best if you cancelled your subscription to the 'Enquirer' and worried about your own provincial regulator.

In respect of the two major groups running CE seminars , I have this to say :

All politics aside, they both put on professional seminars and both their leaders are dedicated educators .

The one you bash the most and try to smear has given opticians the most and he should be recognized for the gift of education that all optical ECP's have received from him . Without that one particular gentleman, most of you would not have the professional status, respect and education that you enjoy today in Canada. He has never given up on opticians even when opticians have chosen to do otherwise and shot themselves in the foot.

It is time Ontario opticians gave something back to him and honored him with the recognition his efforts deserve .

This man deserves to be named Optician of the Year. He should also be given lifetime member status in the College of Opticians .

Put your misdirected politics aside and recognize the efforts of this gentleman .

I hope that it will happen within one man's lifetime.
