    Tinted Glasses

    Hey Forum members,

I registered on these forums to ask a question regarding tinted glasses. I read the caveats on these forums directed towards consumers that caution us against asking medical question, but my question is hardly clinical at all, so please do not ignore me.

Anyway, I'm trying to pick out a new pair of glasses with a light tint. The reason I want tinted glasses is because I lost my eye a while back, and I wear a prosthetic and as most of you already know, these prosthetics are hardly convincing, especially ones that have little to no movement.

The problem I've been having is trying to find the right percentage of tint. I do not want to wear dark looking glasses, ones that might pass for sunglasses, because they'll probably make most people feel awkward like I'm hiding something. I'd like something in between, something that hides most of the imperfections of my prosthetic, without necessarily blanketing my eyes like shades.

In other words, I'm searching for glasses for cosmetic reason, can someone help me out.

I am not saying this to be rude or mean but you really should talk to an ECP in person. Not that I am unwilling to give advice on this but they should have a display for you to look at. That way you can actually see it and get a better idea of exactly what you want. If you came in to talk to me I would suggest a gradient tint. That is darker on the top lighter on the bottom. Go talk to your ECP and they can show you the colors available.

I suppose I can, it's just that I'd like to go in, with some knowledge of what I want.

Discuss it with them - that's what they're there for. Explain your situation, and they will have a good solution. It's not that uncommon.

Let me add one word of advice; get the least amount of tint possible. Light is data, light is what you see with. When there is a surfeit of light, when you are out in bright light, you can afford to reduce it, as with sunglasses. When you are indoors, and particularly at night, tint takes away vision. Don't overdo it for cosmetic reasons.

As far as the cosmetic issue is concerned, while you may be "shy" about it, most people understand that a prosthesis does not make the user/wearer somehow less than human. If they stare, it is usually because they may either be trying to figure out which eye to look at or admiring the fine workmanship of the maker. If you think about it that way, you will learn to ignore the stares.
