    VA Charts Need Updating

So I took my son in to get an eye exam. At three years old, my son was a bit of a challenge in the chair but the ophthalmologist was good at her profession so she kept things moving at a quick enough pace and also kept him interested. Since Thomas is three years old it's a bit of a challenge to get a VA so they use images. The first few he got right away, it was hilarious when they showed the horse.

The first time he saw it he called it a "hee haw", the second time he called it a "giddy up". Kids are funny that way. The best part was when she showed him an image of the phone.

Thomas sat there with a blank look on his face so the doctor gave him a clue, she said, "it's a phone." He immediately turned to her and said, "No it's not." After a few chuckles we realized how long has it been since anyones seen a rotary phone. Most people don't even have a house phone in this day and age. So I contribute to you the new phone.

    priceless!!

My son's first exam was at about the same age with the same kind of results. He refracted out to +4.00 -0.50 OU and has been steadily been improving over the years (he's now 20 and at +1.75 -0.50 OU...but what surprised me was the doc testing for image fusion at 3 years old.

It makes some sense when you know that he was born with Down's Syndrome, but still...

Was very pleased and he's been a patient of that doc ever since.

When I worked for an ophthalmologist, most kids called that phone a T-shirt. None of them knew it as a telephone.
A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!

I've been surprised at the number of children that can ID the rotary phone, a good number of them do however call it a cell phone!

Harry, you've got to let your kids watch more old cartoons, you know, the ones with Mickey Mouse, Elmer Fudd...

Have you gone back and watched those older cartoons? They were ultra violent with cats being chopped up into bits and blown up with dynamite. It was awesome. I took Thomas in for a follow up today and he got the horse right and still was clueless when it came to the phone. This time it was funny watching the doctor defend the phone like she somehow had stake in a company that produced rotary phones.

It was funny she even said what about the toys that they pull behind them that are rotary phones, and I remember one from my childhood but I don't think they're mass producing those anymore.
