    Confused Edge thickness after edging

    Hi guys and gals...

Before I order a lens, is there a way to figure (approximately) how thick a lens edge will be AFTER the lens has been edged? I use the Opticampus thickness calculator, but am under the impression that the measurment I get is for the lens blank itself and I'm in need of a ball park on the thickness after edging. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Heather,

I just took a look at the OptiCampus thickness calculator and it is giving you that information already. Alternatively you can download a excel program from a previous thread:

The OptiCampus calculator provides the center thickness and the edge thickness along the 180 of the finished or edged lens.

    Best regards,

Hey, I wanted to let you know I've added Opticampus to my Favorites for just this very reason!! Thanks for the help. :)
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I don't update the site as much as I'd like to, since I just don't have the time, but I try to keep it as useful as possible. I'll probably add some contact lens calculations at some point.

    Best regards,

Does the bevel effect these results?

Not so much on plus lenses, although the bevel type (rimless, mini/guided, 1/3-2/3) will always influence the edge thickness results slightly for minus lenses.

My point is on minus lenses, the measurements that are calculations go to the apex of the bevel. The thickness calculated would be correct rimless or flat edge, however on bevel lenses the calculation would be different, sometimes much different depending upon the lens power and the dimensions of the bevel. The final product would never be as thick as calculated. Regardless of bevel placement (that would only influence apearence and not thickness). Also for the same reasons, the calculations for plus lenses are often too thick. (In case you've ever wondered why a lab would consistently make plus lenses too thick.)
